The Dutch have finally rethought their liberal position on sex with animals and outlawed bestiality.

Previously it was OK to have sex with animals in Holland if the animal liked it.

I really like and respect the Dutch people, and I'm glad they've decided to pass a law to protect their animals from sexual abuse.

As Peak Oil really starts to bite, and as societies become more dependent on farm animals and local dairies and local food, and as city people start to interact more with farm animals, its probably a good idea to have these kinds of laws already in place to protect the farm animals from sexual abuse and other kinds of mistreatment.

Yeah it's probably for the best. As long as it is perfectly legal to kill animals for food i'm fine with anything.

Although I have no personal physical attraction to animals, the argument against it seems incredibly weak.

Sure, sex with animals doesn't involve their consent, because we can't ask them if it is OK.

Yet we don't ask them it is OK if we:

Keep them caged or fenced in
Squeeze their mammary glands every single day
Take away their eggs
Force them to make with other animals
Take away their children
Kill them
Eat them

I'm not necessarily saying sex with animals is a good thing, but the arguments that are used against it are ridiculous. We don't treat animals as humans (again this is a statement of fact, not an ethical stand), and so we can't pretend in this one case that we do.

you come up with some strange topics, plant.

strangely enough only about half the world's countries have laws against sex with animals and I wouldn't know which ones those are. Furthermore I wouldn't actually know what the value is of such a law next to the existing laws against the abuse of animals and while still allowing ritual slaughter of animals and/or other what could be considered cruel practices in farming. These issues are currently also under discussion.

Seems to me that the tiny animal rights party we have in parliament with a few seats since the last election have most definately managed to get their concerns on the political agenda.

Funny fact: Pim Fortuyn was murdered by a slightly crazy animal rights activist over his refusal to ban the "cruel" breeding of some animals for their fur...

Waalkens is actually a member of parliament for the laborparty. Anyway, it's true that internationally Holland does have a name to uphold as being free, openminded and liberal also about sex, but indeed I don't see how sex with animals would help with that...

And this image of Holland as being so free and openminded about sex is actually quite far from the nature of the people that for a large part has been strongly influenced by different brands of protestantism, which makes it kind of surprising to see that during the twentieth century the sexual debate has developed in such a straightforward way as in most other Christian societies hypocrisy is still the rule.
