Can you repair it? I bought a wind up radio once, it broke and when I opened it I found the wind up mechanism was never ment to be repaired. _________________ Appuis ait fabrum esse suae quemque fortunae.

I've spent the day working on the layout of my new fruit tree orchard. After working out the contours of the landscape for the purpose of positioning the trees, I learnt a little more about the usefulness of keyline design.
So I've made modifications to the layout of my trees to maximize water utilisation.
For those interested in permaculture, I'll updated my blog with a short essay and annotated photograph I made on the advantages of tweaking contour layouts with keyline design principles.

Twice I tried to put up a lengthy post and it got eaten by the internet gremlins. Not enough of patience left to do it again. _________________ Local fix-it guy.. |

Last night we got 6 barrels of wheat from our farmer friend. It was very clean, so I asked how he did that. He described a 3" PVC pipe with 2 wye fittings, one pointed up where the grain is poured in, and another positioned lower where a blower is attached. He used the blower outlet of a shop vac. A length of pipe extends above the grain entrance, where the dust and chaff exit. Simple, and very effective!
edit: Fourth try was the charm.... _________________ Local fix-it guy.. |

Today I learned that small wild pigs are out in the fields near my house. If they trespass onto my acres, I may have to get out the bow. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

The state of wisconsin has (essentially) said "shoot on site, we'll worry about the legalities later"
I like that approach.

I've done a number of things since I last posted here.
1. put a lot of nails in the barn
2. filled up the LP tank (the latest into the hurricane season we have ever waited).
3. the bride agreed to
a) turn the heat off upstairs this winter
b) that it is a good idea to get a treadle sewing machine (the kind the Amish south of here use)
c) we should get thermal curtains for the whole downstairs even if they are ugly
4. Started working double shifts again (usually I take the whole summer off) to see how much debt we can get paid off before the new baby comes.
5. Lots of baby chicks hatched and growing. |

Got another bucket of wheat, and some air potatoes from our food co-op (RSG, they turned up today! ). I decided to try planting the air potatoes after reading about them in my new perennials book and researching them online.
My gardens this year are sucking, except for the potatoes. This is our first year here, so the soil isn't great yet, and I didn't really have time to get them set up right. Also I don't have enough time to tend to them because of my job. But the goats are doing great, and the new batch of chickens is doing much better than the last batch.
We will be doing some work on our cabin in TX next weekend. _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

There are a lot of cottontail and deer out here too. I've seen and heard wild turkey as well. But I've yet to put on the camo and take a walk in the early morning with the bow. I need to.
Perhaps it's time start a "small game hunting" or just "hunting" thread. I would be interested in reading others' experiences. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Peakoiler-I'm trying to copy a picture here (I don't know if it will come through or not )of the wild hogs we shot 1 year ago. This is my relative that they chased when he was out feeding the horses and both of the hogs attacked our horses and almost killed two of them due to blood loss. If you have wild (ferral)small pigs around, you will probably have large ones-get rid of them. (SCF-you wonder why I want a 12 ga shotgun--actually my husband is arguing that he wants a 30-06-we're still in the discussion mode) |

Husband killed his first varmint today, a young raccoon that was going after the Silkies in broad daylight. I tried to shoo it away but it went for me, so my husband shot it with his pellet gun. He's planning to get a varmint rifle soon.
So all that wasn't much fun.
This morning I planted melons, basil, parsley, and cilantro. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

| Be careful Ludi-you probably already know, but watch out for rabies. I'm on call and working in the office and the hospital this weekend-can't do alot of PO stuff today except pick a few pitiful looking blackberries out back-they are really small this year, almost not worth the effort. |
