I went to a fiber arts festival today, got to meet a lot of people, network, also got to do some spinning and learn more -- I finished my first bobbin of yarn while I was there. I think I actually am getting the hang of this!
Some of the people there were making the most beautiful items, I wish I had taken pictures.
I bought some carders, some washed fleece to blend with my angora, and several rolls of yarn from the vendors there. _________________ Conservation is conservative

I love spinning!! It is addicting and relaxing!! (Well, sometimes relaxing, sometimes frustrating. But the better I get, the more relaxing it gets.) Do you raise your own angora for the wool, or do you buy it somewhere else? I am wanting to get some angoras for the wool.
I have a friend at church who is looking to get rid of her sheep wool at shearing but it will have to be washed and carded. So I am very excited about that opportunity to learn and mess up on fiber I am not paying for.
And another exciting thing - I am planning out the chicken coop for the new babies on the way... 25 of them. I am an expectant chicken mommy! Hubby's not so excited, since the actual building is his job. He's reminding me they don't need a McMansion.

We hit the Goodwill today for bargains and came out with 2 pr. of good jeans for me. I go through them fast crawling all over farm machinery. And my wife found a couple shirts. The bill was under $10, and it all looks like new. We're trying to replace clothing, and get extra so we won't need to buy later when money is short and prices high.
Filled up my wife's VW and got a solid 32 MPG again. I think I can tweak it and get another 3 or so. More tire pressure, synthetic oil, and a free flow air cleaner, coming up soon. Back at home, we put up a sheet of melamine panel on the sunporch, so I can call the LP guy tomorrow to hook up the stove in there and fill our tank.
We bought Seed To Seed and Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook, per SpringCreek Farm's reccomendation. Will read up on root cellaring, as that is a coming project.
I went for the last load of the free concrete blocks later, for a total on hand of 164. Some of them are dirty, but the kids have a pressure washer, so I'll try that with plain water. Maybe it will knock off some of the old mortar, too. That's planned for a root cellar, but don't know how long it will take. Too much to do. _________________ Local fix-it guy..

Sold some old Lenox china for $100. Very slowly getting rid of some things we've been storing but never use. Most of it we'll probably end up giving away. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post.

I recently bought two angora bunnies, and I'll be breeding them in August. If you live anywhere nearby, you're welcome to come by and get one in the fall. (I would recommend an unrelated partner if you're going to be breeding them.) _________________ Conservation is conservative

Welcome lostonrichwood!
Sounds like you are off to a fine start. Many folks have nowhere near that much going. Just being aware and understanding the problem is a great advantage in making good decisions. _________________ Local fix-it guy..

getting through to relatives and friends is a highly complex and difficult challenge we all face. Was there an event, emotion, or news story that triggered your listening to your sister? RedStateGreen,
Thanks so much. I wish I did live near so I could get the bunnies. But you guys have big tornadoes there, so I think I'll stay here and keep looking for them. I am in NC.

Seeds for the garden arrived Saturday. Will be planting within the next week or so.
Put the last of the seedlings in on the new land (200 or so) on Sunday. Puts us at about 500 trees planted in phase 1.

We have been cutting and clearing a lot of brush and weed trees while we can still afford to rent and run the big chipper that handles 4 inch limbs. I planted some more fruit trees, grafted a few even though it is kind of late, and started to get ready to transplant some seedling peaches that I had forgotten about. Dug around them so that (hopefully) I will be able to dig and move them without stressing them too much.
Our potatoes are starting to show above ground, we are eating asparagus, lettuce, and spinach from the garden and made the first rhubarb dessert of the season last week.

each year the garden gets better and better.
its all organic, compost, no chemical or processed fertilizers, no pesticides/herbicides, open pollenated seed from the previous crop
1st try with cilantro, the things got to about 6" high, bolted to 12, put out a few seeds and crapped out.
next year it was a foot high, bolted to 2', got more blossoms, then it crapped out
This year the stuff is a tree. Hundreds of blossoms, 6' high.
same with everything else.
I'm putting in less effort, just don't have the time off from work, looks like the stuff is on steroids.
The fennel is so big I can't see the fence behind it
Dill is way over my head
Used to be 2-3 tomatoes/plant, last year was around 6, don't know what I'll do with whats coming this year
still having trouble with the beets. working on it _________________ If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."

The lady I bought them from lives in NC, she was visiting her sister here in OK and brought them to me. PM me and I'll send you her name and email.
Planted two more tomatoes and one bell pepper. I might put in a few more later if I feel up to it. _________________ Conservation is conservative
