How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Gasoline is typically cheap down here, but today it was 2.99 for regular unleaded.

While we are weighing in for the coming crisis this dog weighs in at 210 pounds at 5'11" and am in good shape. I know that feeling of being a guy who is not messed with often.

The question I have is when to take the TDI off of the back of my VW golf (TDI=diesel and ~50mpg).

The last time prices were this high I ran some errands in town. During that trip I had occassion to talk to three people; two of whom commented upon my TDI and I got a little weirded out. I can't help but wonder if I am driving the next "most stolen" model of car in the nation. Knowing my luck that will happen about two weeks before I have it paid off.

I suppose I should just go take it off... it just seems hard to purposefully do that to the biggest energy insecurity investment I've made.

I know how you feel; I have a Jetta TDI.

I'm thinking about replacing "TDI" with one of these puppies:

Oh yeah, they will be stolen, definitely. We had a Jetta, it was stolen. Sad

Another TDI'er here. Jetta wagon 5 M/T. Purchased in March 2005. Thank you very much Matt Savinar and Peakoil.com.

That is a good idea. The good news is that those emblems are easy to remove. Once upon a time I was a car enthusiast. A lot of car enthusiasts like to de-emblemize their cars for other reasons.

Just heat up the area around the emblem with a hair dryer, and use something like monofilament fishing line to separate it from the body of the car. A little solvent afterward to get rid of the glue residue and voila... a sleeper.

Maybe the 1.8T would also be a good replacement???

I can't tell you how many times people have said to me at the gas station "stop! you're putting diesel in your car" -- "it will ruin the engine".

Hehe.

$2.95 at the cheapest station here for regular and holding, but the other stations nearby are between $2.98 and $3.05.

Deisel ranges from $3.49-$3.59 at my local stations, fortunately Kerosene is still a way low $3.33.........

Diesel's at $3.29 here.

But the 45-50mpg the TDI cars can achieve offsets the benefit of cheaper gasoline, at least in my case: I get about 28-30 with my Altima 3.5 5 m/t.

I haven't done a break-even analysis yet but I think gas would have to be about 60% more expensive than diesel to make driving MY car cheaper.

Not there yet.

I wonder if diesel fuel will be available if/when gasoline is in short supply, as it is needed for transport, agriculture and the like.

Will driving a diesel really give us a leg up over the average car driver when it matters? IE will we still be able to get diesel if there is a gasoline shortage?

If some sort of rationing scheme were imposed upon us, then the TDI would definitely be at an advantage, as it is right now. Only instead of saving money, we'd be able to get more miles out of the fuel we can get.

RE; kerosene, I know older diesels can run on it, but I'm not so sure that modern TDIs can do that without either risking engine damage or changing the injectors/pump. Anyone who knows care to comment?

Thanks.

Wholesale RBOB gasoline has been hovering around $2.45 all week, which is basically in the record high neighborhood.

I have a very bad feeling about what's going to happen to retail prices next week. We may be in for some real shocks.

I have a bad feeling about what is going to happen to gasoline inventories in the next couple of weeks!

Then there will be a whole lot of "real shocks" going around.

$3.73 here for regular today here in SF. It's been going up every day this week. Sometimes more than once per day. I'm thinking over $4 by Thanksgiving.

This may directly effect gasoline exports to the US:

A perfect storm? US refinery utilization hitting record lows, historically low gasoline inventories, and demand still strong! Problems cropping up all over Europe. Last week I predicted a 70 to 80 cent rise in gasoline prices by Thanksgiving. I am changing my
prediction to 80 to 90 cents.

Prices at my local gas station, here in Northern Virgina, jumped 14 cents last night!

The coming depression is not coming fast enough to stop escalating oil related costs.

A 90 cent increase in gas would give us about a $3.50 national average. I think that is still quit likely by Thanksgiving. Wednesday’s IEA report will tell the tale.

The price of wholesale gasoline went up six cents/gallon faster than the NYC gasoline futures price this week along the Gulf Coast. Oil imports into the Gulf Coast region have fallen well off levels seen earlier this year, most due to various shipping and production problems with Mexican oil. So those in the Midwest should see gasoline prices keep rising fairly fast.

Energy Information Administration says gasoline price to rise 20 cents -or more (gallon) - by year end. Surprisingly the EIA has been more pessimistic than other conventional energy analysts about oil and gasoline supplies.

Plus the EIA does not blame speculators for high prices.

Quote:
U.S. Forecaster Sees Further Jump In Gasoline Prices
By JOHN J. FIALKA
November 13, 2007

The U.S. Department of Energy's top forecaster expects gasoline prices to climb an additional 20 cents a gallon by December and said prices could go still higher if OPEC doesn't increase production.

Yesterday, the national average retail price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.10, according to the AAA, formerly the American Automobile Association. Guy Caruso, who heads the department's Energy Information Administration, said the price of gasoline will continue to rise even if crude oil prices don't because the past jump in crude prices hasn't been fully passed on to gasoline consumers by oil refiners.

He also said he expects crude oil prices to remain high through the first three months of 2008, and warned that supplies coming onto the market after that will be more costly because of "dramatic increases in the cost of doing business" for oil companies.

Mr. Caruso said speculators may have helped push the price rise, but he said their impact "is really a symptom of market fundamentals" because demand for oil remains high.
