I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

p.s. did some research myself and found the same article you refer to.

Also found information that another 3-4% of all oil consumption is for the manufacturing of plastics, the 4% figure referes to the amount of oil used as a feedstock for plastics.
So, that's a fair proportion - 7-8% in total. Clearly, transport and heating are the main users though.

How did we get to be arguing, ahem, debating about this again??!! Laughing

So if only 40% of US oil consumption is transportion, is most of the rest really for heating?
I find that difficult to believe!! Especially since the plastics industry is just mammoth.

I wonder what the true breakdown is?

not arguing lol. I was just trying to answer your question. :D

I'm starting to think AID's and other STD's would spread like crazy once we don't have any condoms. Just a thought, it may help with the world population.

Not to nitpick, but AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and should be in all caps.

hmmm, condoms only have a shelf live of two years, so you might have a hard time selling them down the road Wink

but on the STD and AIDS side, I am not sure they would go through the roof after the peak, because you will not be able to get around anymore like one used to.

Yaow. A strong pitch from left field. A red letter day for the New Romans, without a doubt.

As long as we're throwing balls that far, do you think this sums up the hairless chimp brigade in the New American Century: ??

We're not at the Peak of anything, really; as a matter of fact, we're all in the dregs!! Laughing

Heh, it would almost be more appropriate to have made this thread:

"Stuff not made from Oil"

Like paper, glass, metal and umm wool and uhhh cotton and you know .... stuff.

Aha! another one: Food. Oh hang on a sec most food is made from oil. Hmm what about water, yup oil/gas is needed for water, clean water at least.

Y'know what? We're screwed, at least our affluent lifestyle is screwed and a large proportion of the world's population is terminally screwed.

Yes I know I know, I'm being optimistic.

This goes the same for synthetic drugs like MDMA(ecstasy) etc.... the chemicals used to precure them is made from oil.

THC itself is naturally an oil, which is good.

Oil is used to make explosives, how are we going to have modern warfare without oil?
Only explosive I can think of which dosn't need oil is black powder.

Oil is used to maintain nukes, guess nuclear war can't happan without oil, thats good because I don't want this world to go into brinksmanship.

In the June 2004 issue of National Geographic, there is a photo of all the things in a home that come from petroleum products. For the shot, they emptied a suburban home onto the front lawn.
