Climate-Change Deal Is `Daunting Challenge,' UN Says

Quote:
Representatives from 170 nations failed to come up with proposals on how to slow global warming, heightening the differences between wealthy and developing countries, the United Nations and environmental groups said.

Delegates who called for more joint action provided no specific plans on how to cut carbon-dioxide emissions blamed for causing higher temperatures, Yvo de Boer, the UN's top climate- change official, said today at a briefing in Bonn. The U.S., Canada and Australia presented roadblocks that pose threats to an overall agreement, Greenpeace said.

China and other developing countries are looking for leadership from the U.S. and other wealthy countries to provide strategies on financing and technology sharing which are not being put on the table, said Greenpeace's Bill Hare. Negotiators have spent two weeks in the German city discussing how to replace the Kyoto Protocol treaty, which binds 37 signatory nations to emissions cuts and expires in 2012.

Ocean temperatures and sea level increases 50 percent higher than previously estimated

Quote:
New research suggests that ocean temperature and associated sea level increases between 1961 and 2003 were 50 percent larger than estimated in the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.

The results are reported in the June 19 edition of the journal Nature. An international team of researchers, including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory climate scientist Peter Gleckler, compared climate models with improved observations that show sea levels rose by 1.5 millimeters per year in the period from 1961-2003. That equates to an approximately 2½-inch increase in ocean levels in a 42-year span.

The ocean warming and thermal expansion rates are more than 50 percent larger than previous estimates for the upper 300 meters of oceans.

Expect More Droughts, Heavy Downpours, Excessive Heat, And Intense Hurricanes Due To Global Warming, NOAA
Quote:
The U.S. Climate Change Science Program and the Subcommittee on Global Change Research has released a scientific assessment that provides the first comprehensive analysis of observed and projected changes in weather and climate extremes in North America and U.S. territories. Among the major findings reported in this assessment are that droughts, heavy downpours, excessive heat, and intense hurricanes are likely to become more commonplace as humans continue to increase the atmospheric concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases.

Global warming of the past 50 years is due primarily to human-induced increases in heat-trapping gases, according to the report. Many types of extreme weather and climate event changes have been observed during this time period and continued changes are projected for this century. Specific future projections include:

Abnormally hot days and nights, along with heat waves, are very likely to become more common. Cold nights are very likely to become less common.

Sea ice extent is expected to continue to decrease and may even disappear in the Arctic Ocean in summer in coming decades.

Precipitation, on average, is likely to be less frequent but more intense. Droughts are likely to become more frequent and severe in some regions.

Hurricanes will likely have increased precipitation and wind. The strongest cold-season storms in the Atlantic and Pacific are likely to produce stronger winds and higher extreme wave heights.

Destruction Of Greenhouse Gases Over Tropical Atlantic May Ease Global Warming

Quote:
Large amounts of ozone -- around 50% more than predicted by the world's state-of-the-art climate models -- are being destroyed in the lower atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic Ocean. This startling discovery was made by a team of scientists from the UK's National Centre for Atmospheric Science and Universities of York and Leeds. It has particular significance because ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a greenhouse gas and its destruction also leads to the removal of the third most abundant greenhouse gas; methane.

North Pole Could be Ice-Free This Summer

Quote:
Arctic sea ice could break apart completely at the North Pole this year, allowing ships to sail over the normally frozen top of the world.

The potential landmark thaw - the first time in human history the pole would be ice-free - is a stark sign of global warming, according to an article Friday on the web site of the The Independent, a London newspaper.

Last summer saw a record melt of Arctic sea ice, which shrank to more than 30 percent below its average. Around the peak of the melt, in September, air temperatures over land in the western Arctic from August to October were more than 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) above the 1978-2006 average.

Reality time:
Australian droughts to be more severe and occur more often in the future:
July

drought policy

future droughts

Australia's Murray Darling river system is dying and with it most of Australia's prime farming land.

Vogelzang you are a serial pest who knows nothing about what is really happening to our planet. At best you have been conned, at worst you are doing the conning. Either way nothing you can say or think will stop real human induced climate change destroying Australia's ability to feed ourselves. So you can take your crap theories and shove them where the sun don't shine.

*claps* Well said! Smile
This brings up an interesting idea though. What makes "denialists" tick? It seems like there are really two breeds of them - people who know the real information, and deliberately spread misinformation for personal gain, and those who don't have enough good information that they fall for the former's lies.

Whenever we hear or see information, we go through an evaluation process which ultimately results in either belief or disbelief of what we're presented with. People have a natural bias to accept the first info they get as "fact" against which they judge every subsequent piece of info on the same subject: ie, once someone has been effectively and repeatedly lied to, it's harder and harder to convince them of the truth.

So how do you crack that? On one hand I think the key is educating people and presenting them with irrefutable facts. On the other hand, they're more likely to reject it once they've accepted the lies as "truth," since the real facts don't fit with what they have already evaluated as fact.

Costa fires warning shot on Garnaut report link
Quote:
New South Wales Treasurer Michael Costa says the recently-released Garnaut report contains "nonsensical" and "Chicken Little"-like warnings which fail to consider the nation's energy security and overlook the need for compensation for the power sector.

Ever notice how it is hard for a man / government to accept something when his / their job/s and income depends on him / them not accepting it?

Especially when he is trying to sell the NSW state owned coal based power plants for top dollar.

Acidifying Oceans Add Urgency To Carbon Dioxide Cuts link
Quote:
ScienceDaily (July 6, 2008) — It's not just about climate change anymore. Besides loading the atmosphere with heat-trapping greenhouse gases, human emissions of carbon dioxide have also begun to alter the chemistry of the ocean--often called the cradle of life on Earth.

Victoria's grim climate outlook link
Quote:
The Department of Sustainability and Environment has warned Victoria's average temperature could soar by almost three degrees by 2070 if carbon emissions continue to grow. The DSE has released updated forecasts on the impact of climate change on Victoria's regions. If emissions are not cut, the projections warn annual average rainfall would decrease by around four per cent by 2030 and 11 per cent by 2070. Manager of the DSE's Climate Change Adaptation Branch, Rod Anderson, says Victoria is likely to face more frequent droughts and heavy coastal erosion.

"Consistent with many of the other reports that are coming out, this part of Australia looks like getting drier, and that would mean more frequent and more severe droughts and certainly less snow, both because of higher temperatures and also because of less precipitation," he said.
Anyone like some TOAST?
