Eyewitnesses are reporting a strong smell of petrol in the area before the first explosion. One guy said there was a major leak around a tank at the depot 2 or 3 weeks ago, which was being treated with foam.
I don't know whether leaks at depots are normal, but it sounds like a major screw up.

People already panic buying, this will be the short term problem. We've seen one large queue at about 10.30 this morning.
Motorway closed for days possibly
How do I get to work along with everyone else along single track country roads.

Regardless of what the police say, people will panic buy fuel and for good reason too. Shortly the price of fuel will go up, and if you don't get yours now, you'll pay more later on because of all the panic buyers before you. So......panic buy!

Quote: The Buncefield depot supplies petrol and fuel oils for a large part of southeast England. Oil is brought to the depot, near the town of Hemel Hempstead, in an underground pipeline from tankers unloading on Britain's east coast. .. http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArtic ... LOSION.xml
This is not just some depot.
I like how all media are soothingly unanimous on it being an accident, cos
a) if it was terrorism it might occur to john blow that maybe they need their boys back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and
b) accident or terrorism, this distribution hub is still kaput.
I wouldn't be panic buying, i'd be calmly rationally stocking up.

Quote: Police appeal for people NOT to panic buy.
As someone said earlier about the Jeb Bush's plea in Florida, might as well hold up a starter pistol and say, "Ready, set, go!"
I think this will be a big deal if it turns out to be a terrorist attack. Because then traders will start worrying about other terrorist attacks.

If it is a terrorattac, and there are one or two more of them in the sort run, well, then there migth be an interesting price-development.

I'm just saying that when Katrina and Rita hit there were some folks ready to run for the hills, certain that the end was near...

Just come back from the park here in Luton, you can see a plume of smoke stretching miles into the distance to the East. We are North about 8 miles and can smell fumes.
I'm sure there'll be some health implications for people to the east.

Spectacular? Yes. The explosion was heard through most of southern and eastern England, as well as Northern France and Holland. But it’s not significant in terms of shortages or price. **This is going to be well over 500 million dollars lost in fuel alone plus 1 billion extra in cost, insurance, destroyed tanks ect... 320 million liters of liquid ie read some others then just gasoline...history..already thin supplies due to the two hurricanes now in the EU..in other words not too much assistance can come to the resque. The people of the UK were panic buying on the threat of a trucker strike in Oct of this yr....now 320 million liters...and higher fuels cost by the day...I predict a panic soon "I know I'd be filling up everything" thus this could lead to shortage...Also note the 320 million liters down 1 day....dont see an instant fix. Winter is here, the UK is already stuggling with Nat gas and gasoline as it is. This will cause a shot term problem esp if people panic buy...which is 50/50 short term I cant see how gasoline prices will not rise given the situation already... No this is not Peak Oil or long term but it will be anouther jolt ..and I think short term it will be significant..Thats alot of liquid..If I am not mistaken the USA was importing after the storms 1 million gallons a day from the EU....the UK just lost 60 million gallons..or 2 full months of gasoline sent to the USA.....thats pretty big..had Kate and Rita not happen the USA could be sending tankers and extra gas to the UK today....but...same goes with the other EU nations....everything is just so paper thin now..and the worse season is here! Wait and see...but I cant see how this wont cause short term problems...I predict its going to look like the 2000 type strikes again..about on those lines pretty soon.
Smoke is drifting in your direction...panic!
The proportion of fuel lost is a small proportion that is used in just this country; it will make no difference at all. But look at all that smoke? And humans have no effect on the world's climate...hmn..
