There's a comprehensive report at the 'Guardian' website:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story ... 88,00.html

As I live only a few miles from the gigantic Ellesmere Port Oil Terminal, driving past, it's clear to see that these installations are wholly vulnerable to terrorist attack - should such a scenario ever arise. This one is sited near numerous airfields/airports and also has a major motorway running alongside it.

In this instance though, it's being reported as the result of an accident, which we should probably accept. Given the capital the government could make out of any such terrorist attack, they'd be onto it like a shot as part of their national ID card initiative.

They thought that about 911 at the begining. Usually thou, planes don't fly into high rise buildings, and usually key oil installations don't just blowup by themselves, did an employee press the wrong button or was a security guard smoking in an non smoking area?

Honestly I think someone blew it up.

Seconded. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a homebrewed either...

Real simple solution.
Cut the taxes levied against gas.

Elect me, Specop_007 as your Prime Minister and I assure you this loss will not result in a increase in the price of gas.
And I also promise to whip you Brits back into the fine courageous men and women you once were.

Spectacular, but not significant.

There's no shortage of fuel, in fact the terminal is only the 1/5th biggest, and it’s just a depot, not a refinery.

Spectacular? Yes. The explosion was heard through most of southern and eastern England, as well as Northern France and Holland. But it’s not significant in terms of shortages or price.

I was about to say the same thing. There might be a local disruption to supply but it won't affect national supply or prices.

Wonder if it woke my parents up?
