TV Ads Take Aim at Global Warming

Quote:
In a classic example of spin versus substance, a series of television advertisements designed to counter growing concerns about global warming, and to confuse the issue, will begin airing in 14 U.S. cities today.

In one of the ads, a little girl blows dandelion seeds into the air as a voice-over announcer says, “Carbon dioxide: they call it pollution; we call it life.” The same ad shows idyllic beach and forest scenes as the announcer waxes poetic about the benefits of using fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases.

"The fuels that produce CO2 (carbon dioxide) have freed us from a world of back-breaking labor, lighting up our lives, allowing us to create and move the things we need, the people we love," the ad says. "Now some politicians want to label carbon dioxide a pollutant. Imagine if they succeed—what would our lives be like then?"

Another ad is targeted at environmental “alarmists” and media reports of shrinking glaciers in the Arctic and elsewhere. “Why are they trying to scare us?” the ad asks. “And as for carbon dioxide, it isn’t smog or smoke, it’s what we breathe out and plants breathe in.” (View the ads.)

The ads are scheduled to run from May 18 through May 28 in Albany, New York; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Anchorage, Alaska; Austin and Dallas, Texas; Charleston, West Virginia; Dayton, Ohio; Denver, Colorado; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Phoenix, Arizona; Sacramento and Santa Barbara, California; Springfield, Illinois; and Washington, DC.

On British TV we have just started seeing government adverts going the other way - trying to encourage conservation.

A lot fucking harder is the answer, of course they know thats' exactly what people don't want. This is the beginning of the scapegoating, and will have a lot of success.

"Its' the greens and anti-fossil fuels brigade who've made your life a living hell, they want you to live in pre-industrial squalor!"

Ah yes, the old "knee-deep in horseshit" strawman.

"You're against automobiles! You want us to be knee-deep in horseshit!"

Bet the house and your life that this is primarily the work of ExxonMobil.

You can see the adds here: http://streams.cei.org/

“CO2: We call it Life”.

In one part, the voiceover says: “Imagine if they succeed—what would our lives be like then?”, while we see a shot of the fat kids being loaded into the SUV.

Okay, I’ll imagine: instead the kids will be riding bicycles to soccer practice. Oh, the torment!

Ahaha. Someone forgot to tell that to those unfortunate Africans who were caught in a natural CO2 sink explosion.

CEI
Go to 'Experts'
Go to 'Myron Ebell' Director of Energy and Global Warming Policy (link)

"previously served as senior legislative assistant" blah, blah, blah.

"Mr. Ebell has appeared as a guest on numerous television shows", blah, blah, blah.

"Greenpeace featured Mr. Ebell and three of his CEI colleagues in “A Field Guide to Climate Criminals” distributed at the UN climate meeting in Montreal in December 2005. Rolling Stone magazine in its November 17, 2005 issue named Mr. Ebell one of six “Misleaders” on global warming in a special feature, along with President Bush, Senator James Inhofe, and Michael Crichton. In November 2004 as a result of a BBC Radio interview, seven members of the British House of Commons from all three major parties introduced a motion to censure Mr. Ebell “in the strongest possible terms.” In its May 22, 2004 special Issues and Answers issue, National Journal profiled Mr. Ebell as one of ten people who would lead the global warming debate during the next presidential administration. The Clean Air Trust in March 2001 named Mr. Ebell its "Villain of the Month" for his role in convincing the Bush Administration not to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.

A native of Baker City, Oregon, Mr. Ebell holds a B.A. from Colorado College and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics."

NOW THERE IS A CLIMATE EXPERT FOR YOU!

And as the oceans rise, they can change the ads to say, "Water...they call it flooding, we call it life".

I've just turned off the TV in exasperation at Fox's "Global Warming; The Debate Continues". The title implies that there's still a debate on this subject. I don't watch Fox much: I honestly don't think that what these people are doing can be classed as journalism. I get the impression that their minds are made up and they are just going though the motions to appear to present the opposing viewpoint. They're very skilful at appearing to be impartial, but it's left me feeling frustrated that lots of people will believe that basically everything's okay and all we have to do is tweak a few things.

I'd better sign off, cos i'm getting tongue-tied with frustration. Hope I can sleep okay tonight.

Regards,

L.

Disgusting, absolutely disgusting. If the general public takes to these messages, it'll be the last nail in the coffin.

Freedom of speach and all aside its like a cigarette company running adverts saying nicotine is life. And sometimes for a few minutes it does feel like that. But you know it is bad for you.

Off course if a cigarette company did adverts like this it would be fined gazillions and made out to be evil.

Now where can I get some of that sweet, sweet carbon dioxide? It must be good for me.
