The picture of the piled debris is like a "where's Waldo", except it's "count the fridges".

How lucky Do you really believe that there were only a "handful" of deaths? The entire west end of Galveston Island is gone. Entire bayside communities are flat. Houstonians were told to hunker down. Many people stayed in other communities despite mandatory evacuations.... I find it hard to believe that only a handful of people died. I just think it's not being reported... K Actually it is being reported and I would have to agree that it's remarkable the loss of life was so low. Out of power and 'unsafe,' Galveston starts long clean-upI have heard they have most of the bad areas closed to the public and also helicopters. I wonder what they are hiding ? I have heard it is much worse than they are telling is, just like NO was.
Maybe all the "other" news is over-shadowing what happened and the toll that's been taken in Texas is far greater than what's being reported.
Although this might make some people sick to hear, the real cost to the country might not be the death toll as much as the toll on oil delivery infrastructure. I guess I don't see any reason why the death toll would be hidden from the public. IMO if you stayed down there and ignored all the warning than you're farking stupid and I don't care about reading about the death toll, se la vi.

I actually heard on the news last night that although they have 12 confirmed deaths in galveston, they dont know at this time how many people were washed away. I think they have been focusing more on people still alive and in need of help. During the recovery phase I'm sure they are going to find a lot of bodies and have people reported missing

what no-name said, from another forum:
quote:
Doctor Masters posted this info a few days ago I thought I share it with you..
QUOTE
Well, it's now day four of my promised 7-10 day lull in Atlantic hurricane activity. That prediction still looks reasonable. Heavy thunderstorm activity has begun to increase over the Lesser Antilles Islands, where a tropical wave is interacting with an upper-level low pressure system. This tropical wave is moving westwards at about 15 mph, and has an impressive surge of moisture with it, as seen on animations of total precipitable water from the University of Wisconsin CIMSS group. The region is under about 10-20 knots of wind shear, and probably won't be able to organize much today or Friday due to the shear and presence of the upper-level low pressure system. By Saturday, wind shear is expected to drop over the entire Caribbean, and the upper level wind flow becomes more anticyclonic. These are favorable conditions for tropical cyclone development, and we may have something develop by Sunday in the central or western Caribbean. The NOGAPS is the only major model predicting something will develop. However, most of the models are forecasting the development of a tropical depression off the coast of Africa early next week. I expect we will have Tropical Storm Kyle, either in the Caribbean or off the coast of Africa, by the middle of next week.
This was just posted so it looks like Doctor Masters is right on track as always..

Decent sized storm brewing up in the GOM. The NHC indicates low probability, but look at the size of this thing!

Tropical Storm Kyle Strengthens; Bermuda Issues Watch (Update1)
Quote: Sept. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical Storm Kyle intensified as a watch was issued for Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Kyle's maximum sustained winds strengthened to 60 miles (95 kilometers) an hour from 50 mph late yesterday, the center said in an advisory posted on its Web site at about 4:45 a.m. Miami time. The system was centered 510 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and heading north at 12 mph.
``A turn toward the north-northwest accompanied by a gradual increase in forward speed is expected later today and on Saturday,'' the center said. ``On this track, the center of Kyle and the strongest winds are forecast to remain west of Bermuda.''
The hurricane center's three-day forecast shows Kyle strengthening into a hurricane early tomorrow over the open Atlantic west of Bermuda, before weakening again to a storm and striking Nova Scotia late on Sept. 28.

Kyle is headed towards us. He's going to make landfall in the Bay of Fundy.

300 people still missing since Ike hit Texas We knew the toll was much higher than what they were saying it was. Quote: More than 300 people are missing since Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast last month, and the obstacles to finding them are frustrating family and friends who desperately want to know if their loved ones are dead or alive. These family and friends want answers: Why are so many still missing? Why has the first organized search for bodies, to be held Thursday on the battered Bolivar Peninsula, taken so long?...
...The frustration about the post-Ike recovery runs deep for Robin Huber, pastor of a church that was destroyed along with her home in Gilchrist. Huber estimates only seven homes are still standing in Gilchrist, which is surrounded by huge piles of debris. The amount of debris is unfathomable, Huber said, and it was hurled with such force that residents can barely dig through it.
"Imagine that all of these homes were picked up and dropped from a high airplane," she said. "It looks like a bomb exploded here and the pieces are so stuck in the earth, it's impossible to pull out. Who knows what is in there." Cars and trucks litter the road leading to the highway as if they were trying to escape at the last moment, Huber said.

Podcast from a couple of reporters ...
From the description:
Quote: Lan’s team expected to stay for at least 4 days, documenting the aftermath of the storm, and bringing the story back to the rest of America. That was before a total media blackout was declared by Texas officials, a no-fly zone was imposed upon the entire area, and journalists were told they must leave Galveston immediately. And that’s when we decided we were not letting this story go.

This comment is interesting. May or may not be true:
Quote: Bodies are being brought in massive quantities.

Whatever. I mean the government cover up is creepy, but for God's sake....I've never seen a weather service report before that said "If you don't leave, you're facing certain death." It's hard to get much more emphatic than that. I don't like the cover up aspect, but if people stayed and died, oh well.

The real issue is not the people who died, it's the families who are spending hours and money trying to find their loved ones who are missing.
