Train Derails In Lynchburg, Massive Fire Erupts, “Flames Stories High”

Train Derails In Lynchburg, Massive Fire Erupts, “Flames Stories High” thumbnail

In what can only be explained as a massive oil pipeline derailment, because trains are obviously so much safer when transporting flammable commodities, moments ago another train derailed in Lynchburg, Virginia with numerous railcars falling in the river, and a massive fire erupting with flames that are “storeys high” according to ABC13. And moments ago it was also announced that the train belongs to CSX and the burning product is, expectedly, crude oil.

Additionally, it appears that the CBTX on the side of the train cars indicates they are associated with CIT Croup/Capital Finance.

Some more photos from the scene of the accident:

CSX CEO Michael Ward spoke with FOX Business Network’s (FBN) Liz Claman about CSX’s train car derailment in Lynchburg Virginia. Ward said, “we are deploying all of our resources for three primary purposes; one to support the local emergency responders, and secondly to protect the community and the citizen injury, and finally to protect the environment.” Ward went on to say, “we are actively engaged with the emergency responders” and that “We’re setting up a community response center at this point and we’ve deployed both external and internal environmental experts to the scene.”

On the CSX train car derailment:

“As you noted it just happened a little over an hour ago, so there is not a lot of detail. What we do know is a unit hall train and it was headed to Yorktown, Virginia derailed in Lynchburg at least one car is on fire as the report we have. What I can tell you is we are deploying all of our resources for three primary purposes; one to support the local emergency responders, and secondly to protect the community and the citizen injury, and finally to protect the environment. So we are actively engaged with the emergency responders. We’re setting up a community response center at this point and we’ve deployed both external and internal environmental experts to the scene.”

On railroad regulations:

“We as an industry, we as a company, are in favor of tougher tank car standards. To be honest and forth right with you. We don’t own the cars, they are either owned by customers or leasing companies. But we do think there are some improvements that can be made.”

At least it didn’t crash into someone’s town center this time. That’s something, although it looks like this rail line goes right next to Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. Oh well…

Obama’s purely political opposition to building oil pipelines means more oil will be transported by dangerous trains. Rich environmentalists are giving Obama millions to stop oil pipelines, putting poor people who live near railroad tracks into greater danger.

Plantagenet – How about you give us a list of pipelines that Obama has blocked (or has the authority to block). While you’re at it, please cite your sources for proof that Obama is being given “millions” to stop oil pipelines. I would be really interested to see that, since it would be an impeachable offence.

Get the rail system up to European standards. It can’t be that hard, or can it?

dsula – I’m with you though I have no idea if our standards are that much lower. But I’m about upping safety standards if it’s only a matter of costs.

But to be balanced why the emphasis over this one type of accident: in 2012 fires caused 2,855 civilian deaths, 16,500 civilian injuries, and $12.4 billion in property. Of course this site is about energy and oil is energy. But so is gasoline and a lot more damage has been caused by auto accidents involving exploding fuel tanks.

It appears that it is faulty cars, not rails that are causing the accidents. Using worn out and/or poorly maintained equipment is likely the cause. Cutting $$ corners to make profits in a dying economy.

“Rich environmentalists are giving Obama millions to stop oil pipelines, putting poor people who live near railroad tracks into greater danger.”

That’s what Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and Glenn Beck were all saying the other day too. Must be true… Surely not a distorted version of the actual reality. They would never do that.

This is fastest way to get rid of the devillish black stuff into the atmosphere. And releasing the captured carbon for the energy sake of oil addicted human race….:))

For that, Planty would need to look for “facts”. Surely you know by now that Plantagenet lives in a fact-free zone – part of Fantasyland.

Whats the big deal about pipelines. A few days floating down the james river and the cargo ends up near Yorktown anyhow.

To Plant and Ghung here’s one I have for you to throw in the mix. Unfortunately it’s only hearsay at this point, but I’d like to put it on the radar for future info and discussion…

My accountant, out of the blue, had a VERY interesting story passed on to him from a pipeline contractor client. It is not the environmentalists, but a Canadian oil man/company that is financing the lobbyist to stop Keystone XL.

This fits in well with my thoughts on the matter. The blocking of keystone XL is almost nonsensical. Keystone is already flowing oil. All this politicking is just to block a few Kilometers of the expansion (for which all the pipe is already there sitting rusting on the ground).

Environmentalism, Global warming, all just smokescreens to keep us plebes from following the money. Nobody with power actually cares.

Personally, I’m all for big Canadian oil blocking Keystone. I consider it pay back for the Philly Coal miners funding the blocking of the James bay project.

Looks like the rail embankment gave way, probably because of all the rain:

    >>Get the rail system up to European standards. It can’t be that hard, or can it?

Republicans hate trains because trains are socialism….. even though the hero of “Atlas Shrugged” ran a railroad.
