Pollution, Invasive Aliens, & Mass Extinction: 20,000 Scientists ‘Warn Humanity’ The End Is Nigh

Pollution, Invasive Aliens, & Mass Extinction: 20,000 Scientists ‘Warn Humanity’ The End Is Nigh thumbnail

A wave of nationalist/populist/anti-globalization, record high debt, nuclear doomsday clock at its highs, soaring financial leverage, and now trade wars.

If the world did not have enough to worry about, 20,000 scientists have a few more reasons to believe ‘the end is nigh’…and President Trump is not to blame for any of it (yet).

A dire warning to the world about its future, predicting catastrophe for humanity, continues to gain momentum, becoming one of the most discussed pieces of scientific research ever.

As The Independent reports, the new letter was actually an update to an original warning sent from the Union of Concerned Scientists that was backed by 1,700 signatures 25 years ago. It said that the world had changed dramatically since that warning was issued – and almost entirely for the worse.

Mankind is still facing the existential threat of runaway consumption of limited resources by a rapidly growing population, they warn; and “scientists, media influencers and lay citizens” aren’t doing enough to fight against it.

If the world doesn’t act soon, there will be catastrophic biodiversity loss and untold amounts of human misery, they wrote.

The lead author of the warning letter and new response paper, ecology Professor William Ripple, from Oregon State University, said: “Our scientists’ warning to humanity has clearly struck a chord with both the global scientific community and the public.

World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice

The “second notice” clearly charts the environmental degradation in the past quarter-century and notes that only one out of nine areas assessed, the ozone layer, has improved.

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of their call, we look back at their warning and evaluate the human response by exploring available time-series data. Since 1992, with the exception of stabilizing the stratospheric ozone layer, humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in generally solving these foreseen environmental challenges, and alarmingly, most of them are getting far worse (figure 1file S1). Especially troubling is the current trajectory of potentially catastrophic climate change due to rising GHGs from burning fossil fuels (Hansen et al. 2013), deforestation (Keenan et al. 2015), and agricultural production – particularly from farming ruminants for meat consumption (Ripple et al. 2014). Moreover, we have unleashed a mass extinction event, the sixth in roughly 540 million years, wherein many current life forms could be annihilated or at least committed to extinction by the end of this century.

Humanity is now being given a second notice, as illustrated by these alarming trends (figure 1). We are jeopardizing our future by not reining in our intense but geographically and demographically uneven material consumption and by not perceiving continued rapid population growth as a primary driver behind many ecological and even societal threats (Crist et al. 2017).

By failing to adequately limit population growth, reassess the role of an economy rooted in growth, reduce greenhouse gases, incentivize renewable energy, protect habitat, restore ecosystems, curb pollution, halt defaunation, and constrain invasive alien species, humanity is not taking the urgent steps needed to safeguard our imperilled biosphere.

The scientists over a myriad of solutions: from “reducing food waste” to “divesting of monetary investments and purchases to encourage positive environmental change” and “revising our economy to reduce wealth inequality.”

So – “sell stocks and go green”?

To prevent widespread misery and catastrophic biodiversity loss, humanity must practice a more environmentally sustainable alternative to business as usual. This prescription was well articulated by the world’s leading scientists 25 years ago, but in most respects, we have not heeded their warning. Soon it will be too late to shift course away from our failing trajectory, and time is running out. We must recognize, in our day-to-day lives and in our governing institutions, that Earth with all its life is our only home.

Yeah, but apart from deforestation, invasive aliens, defaunation, population growth, climate-change, pollution, mass extinction, the threat of global thermonuclear war, record high debt, a failing unipolar world order, and the end of globalization; everything is awesome, have you seen the stock market?

“The end is nigh” I have heard that many times, but the pesky humans are still here causing more grief and mayhem to the earth.

For those who will live long enough, watch for “Humanity’s 3rd Warning” on the 50 year anniversary. These dire warnings remind me of Mork and Xidor, if we just change our ways some of us can be saved!

I’ve never understood why so many people in the United States who could never pass a high school chemistry class continue to disparage the work of scientists. We have First World possessions, but Third World social customs. You cannot indefinitely pollute where you reside and not expect negative consequences. Apparently people can believe in invisible all powerful beings that live in the sky, but they cannot fathom the atmospheric effects of gases they cannot see…

I support dumping raw sewage into California lake reservoirs, so companies aren’t saddled with disposal fees.

I don’t know how nigh is the end, but it seems quite far from mainstream medias and population.
Business forces want scientists to create artificial intelligence and space travel, not warning us about our -non negotiable- way of living.
Never will we wake up before it’s too late.

For as long as we spend 35% of money and resources world wide trying to destroy each other instead of improving our lives and planet we don’t need letters like this. Humans are stupid, greedy and incredibly selfish. Change THAT and may be there is hope!

I began to cheer when these scientists warned against “invasive aliens”.

    I should have known better.

Whatever field these scientists are in, you can be sure that they are not keeping up with technological developments. There is absolutely no reason for concern. EGBOK.

With telescopes we search for intelligent live in the universe beyond our world… And all we hear is silence. If there is indeed intelligent life our there one thing is certain in my mind… It is not human. We are proving that human intelligence is not survivable. In the evolutionary scheme of things, the plan of life evolution is proving that the “experiment” of intelligence is a failure. We humans are at odds with all that is around the other lesser intelligent species, our environment and all other things that work together and evolve to survive. You ever wonder why most species on this planet flee form us… Perhas the answer is there… We humans don’t belong here on planet Earth.

All these constitute clear and present danger, including Alien Invasion, with Mass Extinction topping the list. And it is Mass Extinction that makes Alien Invasion relevant.

About “Aliens”, theorists and theories have by and large been barking up the wrong tree, as exemplified by [War of the Worlds]. IMHO, “Aliens” revere life in the Universe, and biospheres of planets, it is the destroyer of planet Earth’s biosphere that they will destroy.

We are the cause of the current ME6 (Mass Extinction #6, potential species loss over 85% – well over a million species when done, thousands of species already). If we maintain that we’re not the cause, we’re not taking responsibility for our actions. If we carry on our present destructive course, the aliens will destroy us – to save what we are destroying. If/when it happens, there is nothing weapons-wise we can do about it in terms of self-defense; so don’t even bother.

The time they will strike, if they do, is the moment we crossed the threshold of no return. We are now poised over our own tipping point, and I mean NOW. The trigger could be if we start a nuclear war, or if we just keep on burning fossil fuels past a certain point, as mentioned above, our own tipping point.

The only way for us to survive this planetary crisis is to transform ourselves from a biosphere-destroying species to a planet nourturing one, and join the “aliens” in the interplanetary and interstellar levels of life.

Since we’re going extinct at our own hands why would an alien bother to get involved. Seems they would have jumped in 100 years ago if they were interested in our planet, before depletion and nature trashing.

“protect habitat, restore ecosystems, curb pollution, halt defaunation, and constrain invasive alien species, humanity is not taking the urgent steps needed to safeguard our imperilled biosphere.” Invasive aliens. Seems a little different when read in the original context.

Obviously: Since we fixed the Ozone layer, we can fix or improve the rest.
Panic won’t help. Fudging climate data won’t help either….scientists.

Some great comments here. Especially, “We humans are at odds with all that is around the other lesser intelligent species, our environment and all other things that work together and evolve to survive.”
YES! Our time is drawing near. In our arrogance and hubris we chose to be shortsighted and dismissive of the harmful impacts we were having on our living environments. And sadly for all our technological achievements we neglected to develop and employ a universal method to control our reproduction. And then mandate or facilitate limits to reproduction globally. We are forlorn species destined for a mighty downfall along with many other species we take with us

The news is bad, so it is time to kill the messengers, all 20,000 of them. 20,000 scientists sacrificed to save humanity is the ticket.

Shouldn’t take too long. Don’t need no stinking scientists. They’re like false prophets, they’re usually wrong all of the time.

Stoning them all to death is an act of kindness, they deserve worse.

Set up a nice concentration camp, a series of trials convicting them of scientific heresy, no recanting, march them all off to a plethora of guillotines and ovens, give them a choice.

A pogrom to completion and a gulag to house them until their untimely demise, a plan implemented until the ungodly work is done.

Wicked scientists must be effectively removed. A medieval witch hunt and swift, sure justice meted out fairly and squarely, can’t convict them if they’re not guilty. However, they all signed the warning, so they’re all guilty of thought crimes and crimes against humanity, the sentence is death.

They all probably weigh less than ducks, proof positive of their evilness.

You have to do what needs to be done.

Millimind is about the best recruiting agent that the far-right could ask for! His views are racist and highly annoying. His insidious, anti-white agenda is basically the same as the Zionist international Jewry. The difference is that he at least he has the courtesy, or idiocy, to say it out loud. Annoying. Kind of like a fly that you just cannot get rid of.

Mastermind “Americans dont trust science and scientists. Because they conflict with their stupid religious beliefs.”
Excactly, their religious belief that their country is the best country in the world and that they have the right to use more of the world’s resources than anyone else. As long as science gives them more goodies they love science just fine. That belief system is called “entitlement”. The other stuff they just use to support their belief that they are entitled to whatever they want.

  29. pointer on Mon, 12th Mar 2018 6:40 am

So if we fixed all the problems — then what?

  30. Darrell Cloud on Mon, 12th Mar 2018 7:30 am

Sitting here in my study, I recognize the problem. All we have to do is shut down 6.8 billion people and the earth will heal itself. Intellectually many are for just that. The devil is always in the details. When we get down to orchestrating that slaughter who lives and who dies? It is simply sad when you and yours are sitting on top of the Georgia Guide Stones watching the rest of the world die off. It gets much more interesting when the storm troopers are rounding up you and yours for the camps.

  31. pointer on Mon, 12th Mar 2018 9:09 am

And once those 6.8 billion people are gone, Darrell, what then? Is it that you will live forever in a relative state of bliss with you and yours on the healing earth after getting over your sadness? Do you not incorporate into your model of whatever is going on that you are dead at some point? Of course you do, but I bet you really don’t, because no one does.

We all engage in addictions of some sort because we are terrified that we don’t know what it is like after we die. Some of us intellectualize about “solutions” on Some of us just shoot up heroin. It’s all really the same thing. And in the end, we are dead.

While I’m on the topic, what will it matter a century from now what your experience of your visit to earth was, whether you were king of the world, or a starving, freezing street person? You’ll be dead, and the only one who cares about what your experience was will be you, and chances are you won’t remember. Which may mean that all discomfort is temporary. No need to fix anything. Eventually the problems you are so concerned about end on their own.

So what do we do about the a-holes who are screwing up the planet? Should we just ignore them, and let them do what they want? For starters, train yourself to see them as a mirror. They’re screwing up the planet? How about you? I’ll bet an alien looking at you and those you think are a-holes won’t see much of a difference. The alien probably won’t see much a of a difference between you and me, too.

It’s all an illusion. Working yourself into a lather is just what the magician wants you to do. For me, even typing these few paragraphs is the lather the magician wants me to get worked up into. Get it? Sound and fury, signifying nothing. In the end, signifying nothing.
