Oil Spill a Planet Killer

Oil Spill a Planet Killer thumbnail

Minister Lindsey Williams, who once served as a chaplain for the oil companies operating in Alaska, shared what he claimed to be the “real story” behind the Gulf oil crisis.

Williams observed that the overwhelming amount of dangerous gasses, which are also being released from the disaster, could be swept along the East Coast should a hurricane arrive in the Gulf. Williams stated that those same dangerous pollutants are in the air in alarming amounts and getting more dangerous everyday. He further indicated that the oil pressure coming up the oil deep water pipe was running between 20,000 and 70,000 PSI. Last night on the Coast to coast Am show Science Advisor Richard C. Hoagland commented on the oil spill in the Gulf. He warned listeners that an even worse catastrophe could be looming if a giant gas bubble that has formed at the site of the leak on the ocean floor should blow. Hoagland said the pressure in the pipe is 100,000 or more lbs of pressure per squire inch or PSI. Both agreed that BP nor anyone else knows how to shop this amount of pressure coming from the largest and deepest underwater oil well on earth.

Williams said “that the dangers from this run away well is a planet killer and we may not be able to stop it.” Mankind could be doomed.

Bell, who calls himself an “ecological designer,” blamed the oil spill on a corporate culture which focuses on making a profit by way of “taking short cuts” that, ultimately, result in situations such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico. He put forward the notion that the ideal scenario to break free of corporate controlled energy is to aggressively pursue efficient solutions which would make the transition away from oil easier and faster. Using solar power as an example, he theorized that, with good leadership, it would take about 40 years for such a transition to take place.

According to writer Jose Lugo in the movie Armageddon, there was a scene where Steve Buscemi who played the part of a reluctant-hero-astronaut and while sitting and waiting for liftoff, he uttered a profound philosophical statement;

“Hey Harry, you know we’re sitting on 4 million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder, makes you feel good doesn’t it”?

In the movie, this statement was made by an oil drilling roughneck to other roughnecks; but it says so much about the oil business and today’s corporate culture. It’s the reckless, do it quick, cheap and dirty routine.

Lugo went on to say that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster is a case in point. The disaster started with an explosion that nobody was ready for. Then the oil companies (BP and Transatlantic) discovered that they had absolutely “NO PLANS” to handle the unfolding disaster, they had to think things up as they went along. They had only one shut off station in one location, that malfunctioned! Reckless, quick, cheap and dirty!

Williams said that the amount of oil gushing from the well is much greater than BP and the amount the Government is reporting as only one million gallons a day. Both guests surmised that the more accurate amount gushing from the well is in the millions of barrels. Why didn’t they have shut off valves along the pipe line? They did but all the system was overwhelmed by the great pressure of the blow out.

But the most anguishing question remains, “Why didn’t they have a back-up plan?” Things happen in the ocean–hurricanes, sinking ships, equipment breakdowns, Murphy’s Law etc.. Why didn’t they have plans for these possible disasters? Because no commercial company has ever drilled that deep before this is a super-deep well with a mile of sea water on top of it. The pressures alone at those depths are enormous and may have contributed to the failures.

During the program it come out that there are multiple holes in the pipe and that more oil is gushing from fissures as far away from the well head as 20 miles.

Hoagland said that at the sea bed at the well for miles around it is a bubble and it is growing, believed to be pressure from a huge natural gas build up that could blow at any time and kill many there and in the general area working to stop the rush of the largest out of control oil leak that man has ever known.

OMG …. Can it get any worse?

Beyond Petroleum needs to be more than a catchy slogan.

BP drilling the deepest well in the world should not have been happening. With their safety record they need to stick to the tried and true that they have experience doing. Pushing the envelope is not what this company and their poor safety record should be doing.

It is time for BP to aggressively move Beyond Petroleum and into alternative energy.

When BP announced their “Beyond Petroleum” ploy circa 911DAY, we wrote them suggesting action to replicate US railway footprint of the pre 1950 era would be the most productive action they/any big corporation could employ to deal with the Oil Interregnum. They are still thinking about how to respond…

Alternative energy mania for the express purpose of perpetuating a private vehicle for everyone on earth at puberty is neither sustainable or desirable or even feasible. Many species shall die while we try, but why must we go through the deadly and dirty motions? This is not to say the car is finished, but simply a cautionary point in the progress of mankind. Dampen use of rubber tire transport growth; Instead- -redirect larger share of transport & renewables investment capital to expanding capacity and enhancing reach of the rail mode in North America.

Boilerplate pages for generic rail discussion are in ASPO (peakoil.net) articles 374 & 1037, Book
“ELECTRIC WATER” by Christopher C. Swan (New Society Press, 2007) and web page “Suntrain Transportation Corporation”. Policy points and details for individual/community initiative can be seen in web postings by “tahoevalleylines” this site, and TOD.

The local railway links shall bring back local employment in local infrastructure, jobs requiring mechanical and electrical skills, and create workplaces (repair facilities) that FIX – not throw away components.

Some places in America already are doing this; there are hundreds of branch line railway operations in the States, and these can be seedbed for rebuilding several hundreds of dormant branch line rail corridor. BP mentioned above as participant in the sustainable transport initiative; add other naturals like Wal-Mart, trucking firms seeing the writing on the wall, Sears, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc. Firms large & small by the thousands have a crucial stake in getting on board rail distribution as Federal Executive Emergency Orders for motor fuel rationing come sometime this decade.

US Post Office history is wrapped around the July 10, 1838 Act of the US Congress, declaring “All Railroads to be designated Post Roads. The Railway Postal Service is the ultimate Guarantor of US Societal & Commercial Cohesion. We shall do these things to preserve the Union Of States, as Abraham Lincoln had in mind when he signed the Pacific (Transcontinental) Railroad Bill in 1862.

Reformed Army/Guard Railroad Operating & Maintenance Battalions are suited to prioritize crucial dormant (agricultural) dormant rail corridor for rebuild, turning over to private operator as work ends. We are going to do these things as a transport/distribution bulwark against energy emergency, disasters manmade or natural.

More strategically important, we are going to havelocal railway links simply because it is time to rally around a national program to bring America to ENERGY INDEPENDENCE, and return to status as a lending not a borrowing nation. Keep ‘Em Rolling

The Macondo oil field is not the largest, nor the deepest underwater oil field on earth. Thunderhorse is both deeper and larger, and Jack and Jack II is even deeper, and Tiber with a staggering 10500 meter is the deepest field drilled (as compared to 6500 meters for this one). What I’ve read, this field is guestimated to have some 50 000 000 barrels of recovarable oil, wich makes it a rabbit or rat sized field, compared to the elephants and mamoths in for example the North Sea.

The bad thing with this leak is not the size, but the location.

The problem with BP is their failure to specialize. They spent billions of dollars farming tax breaks. Wind “farms” exist for the tax breaks. If the had spent the money on making their oil business safer then they wouldn’t have created the mess that they did. Using wind to power ships can save oil, but it doesn’t make sense for utility scale power generation.

Since resources at not limitless won’t overpopulation be the factor that continues to create more demand for resources?

How many people can the planet hold sustainably?

Are we not already beyond the capacity that the planet can absorb? If everyone on the planet now had an increased standard of living equal to Western nations would we be able to feed, clothe, and provide fuel for everyone?

  6. Edpeak on Mon, 21st Jun 2010 12:07 pm

KenZ300, The west does not have the highest standard of living, just the highest CONSUMPTION per capita. It’s an important difference, and may be one of the few silver linings in that we could have as good or better a lifestyle at lower consumption

Wessman, appreciate your info, but looked it up and see that whilt Tiber is deeper, it is not actively being produced. What’s the deepest that is being actively produced, or has been for some time and we’ve had experience with for a significant amount of time? What’s the deepest among those? In other words, the deepest where there is an established record of 1yr or longer of safe drilling? Not Tiber, since it hasn’t been actively produced from, so which is deepest that actually meets those criteria?

  7. Edpeak on Mon, 21st Jun 2010 12:11 pm

And do you know Wessman if the “catastrophe could be looming if a giant gas bubble that has formed at the site of the leak on the ocean floor should blow.” is BS too? Or is that for real?

    Saying something similar is http://www.petroleumworld.com/sf10062001.htm

They claim, “Furthermore, geologists believe there are another 4-5 cracks or fissions in the well. Upon using a GPS and Depth finder system, experts have discovered a large gas bubble, 15-20 miles across and tens of feet high, under the ocean floor. These bubbles are common. Many believe they have caused the sinking of ships and planes in the Bermuda Triangle. That said, a bubble this large — if able to escape from under the ocean floor through a crack — would cause a gas explosion that Mr. Hoagland likens to Mt. St. Helens… only under water. ”

Is that for real, BS, or unknown?

The oil spill was a 100 year in the making. The Gulf of Mexico oil disaster was prophesied in 1903 by Gustav Meyrink, a European author, banker and occultist. In his 1903 short story – Petroleum, Petroleum – he actually says it is a prophecy. And he actually mentions the Gulf of Mexico as the location of the disaster. And he says the goal of the oil spill is to destroy the human habitat and human life itself. Petroleum, Petroleum – itself is about an evil chemist who intentionally causes an oil disaster by blowing up oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico. This destroys the lives of the people living along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. The oil spills into the Gulf for years as the rest of the world bickers about what to do, covering all oceans. This causes seawater to no longer evaporate and it stops raining. This should destroy the rest of humanity. Exactly the intention of the evil chemist, who created the oil spill. Websites and radio shows dedicated to conspiracies and the New World Order are using this 1903 short story to say the Gulf of Mexico oil rig Deepwater Horizon was blown up on purpose and the oil will be allowed to leak into the water for years to come, allowing the New Wold Order to use the disaster to create their one world order.
