Now we’re in debt: Earth Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day is hosted and calculated by Global Footprint Network, an international think-tank that coordinates research, develops methodologies and provides decision-makers with tools and information to help the human economy operate within Earth’s ecological limits. Earth Overshoot Day is the public face and campaigning focus of their highly technical work.

Calculations by Global Footprint Network (GFN) show that human beings are demanding 1.7 times more renewable resources (such as fresh water, wood from natural forests and healthy soil) from the natural world than it can provide. Each year, a symbolic date is passed on which all resources are ‘used up’ and human beings ‘overshoot’ what Earth can provide.

A country comparison

The Overshoot Index, issued by Population Matters and calculated using data from the Global Footprint Network, provides a country-by-country assessment of the demands and capacities of individual countries. GFN  has assessed, firstly, what renewable resources each nation’s land and waters can provide, and what level of emissions and waste it can absorb. They then assess the impact of consumption, waste and emissions and assess whether each country is using more than it can provide.

Each country is not isolated, of course – resources are shared, traded or exploited between countries while the impact of a nations consumption and emissions can be felt elsewhere. The numbers do not balance at a sustainable level, however. At current levels of consumption, based on the assumptions made by GFN there are 2.7 billion people more than the earth can sustainably support; a number that will increase as world population continues to rise by around 80 million per year.

Overshoot needs to be tackled in two ways: the first way is by moving towards more sustainable lifestyles to reduce our per capita consumption. The second way is to tackle population growth so that there is a larger share of biocapacity for each of us.

Population Matters in action

To mark Earth Overshoot Day, Population Matters took “Big Foot” to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History today, as part of our campaign to persuade educational institutions and nature organisations to start telling the full truth about humanity’s impact on the world. Please support the campaign by signing our petition.

Too little. Too late. Nothing that we can do is going to stop the decline or the end.

In other “news”: “Today, “US military” means airplanes. American ground forces are small, not rapidly deployable and–if I may lapse into rural accuracy–pussified, obsessed with homosexuality, girls in combat, trans this and trans that, and racial and sexual quotas in the officer corps. The Pentagon has trouble finding recruits physically fit enough for combat arms.”

“Suppose that the Navy fired on a Chinese ship in the South China Sea, expecting Beijing to roll over as it would have thirty years ago–but it didn’t, instead leaving a carrier in flaming ruin. This is far from impossible. Carriers can be surprisingly fragile, and China has has focused resources specifically of defeating the American Navy in what it regards as its home waters. The American fleet has not fought a war since 1945. It doesn’t really know how well its weapons will work against their weapons.”

i’m very passionate about fighting poverty. as a former paultard i was told there’s no such enemy as poverty, teh same war the war on terror was constructed. nonsense, let’s try the war on extremist tard preachers and see the bodies pile up. or just ask duterte how his war on bums and druggies are happening IRL

i want women to fight and kill their way out of poverty. The US can recruit from India or even the phils and africa.

I’m told a gun is an equalizer but the same tards also said it’s not in the hands of women. this is nonsense.

the vietnam war has men on one side and tons of female gureilla on the other and nobody said anything about it.

anyways my #1 concern is peak fresh water. i think we can setup pipelines from the arctic to get fresh water or even draw it from sea water colums with water on teh surface has highest salinity.

my observation of wind energy tells me offshore wind can be a sort of storage battery. it also means winds is evenly distributed through surface of earth.

this is because i observed that winds only blow when there’s sunlight. no sunlight no winds. it’s almost a 1:1 coorelation

this means we can spray water mist to cover the sunlight. with some fine tuning we can create a massive atmospheric “engine” of sort that drives the wind turbine.

only people like fat tapeworm queen victoria are anti women. it’s a relic and the internet brings out altavistic tendencies amonth the tards.

modern weaponry drones, bombers, cover artillery, naaval fire will provide excellent covers for female units. most male units reach for the radio and call teh A10 at the slightest sign of trouble.

there’s no stopping women in combat. it already ahppened. just because i do’t score doesn’t mean i have to hate women like most of tards.

i love women. i want them to be rich

I thought you had left us. Is this the fake news trump complains about.

  18. Davy on Sat, 5th Aug 2017 10:52 am

Makat, you are getting manic these days. You have mentally unstable pressured thoughts. You are trying harder and harder at proving your delusional agenda. You cherry pick facts and present them with strong emotions of hate and condensation. You are an example of an old man losing it. It happens all the time and all of us that make it to as old as you are will face the same thing. You are a case of a narcissistic asshole who is trying so hard to justify your failed previous life in the US by trashing the US and glorifying Asia. You do this with grandiose flattery of your decision to relocate. You boast how smart you are and how dumb everyone else is. I can see right through your lies and deceit. You are a failure plain and simple.

  19. onlooker on Sat, 5th Aug 2017 11:10 am

The quote by Josh Dalton is a bit disingenuous. No birth of Asia. The fateful decision of India and China to modernize has created an even more untenable situation in that region. The combination of overpopulation and over consumption is tearing the fabric of life and ecosystems in that region. So chaos is in store there just like pretty much every inhabited region on Earth. As some have said different areas have different overshoot consequences to face. And Collapse will not be homogenous in either time or space. I can say that the overpopulation of Asia puts it in danger of imminent die off from scarcity of a critical resource such as fresh water and also from the outbreak of a Pandemic

Thank you for your heartfelt concern clog, but you need not worry about me. In addition to being one all around tough mo fo, I lived in the great state of Georgia for 8 years and half the work I did and most of the play was outside, so I am well adjusted to the heat.

From all appearances and model predictions it’s Europe that needs to worry most. Hi probability of killer heat waves like 2003 (30,000) becoming the norm.

Pro tip. 2100 is bullshit. 2100 is a form of denial that is seen in 90% of AGW papers. It’s projecting today’s and next decades consequences into the future. 3/4 of the climate phenomena that is happening today/right now was projected to happen in 2100 or later in most climate papers from the last 10-20 years. Whoops we were off on the dates.

Here’s what’s going to happen. The warming is 1.2C above the 1880’s baseline. By the time it gets to 1.5C (5-10 years) you will see multi year crop failures. If the economy has not suffered the big one what that will mean for us well to do white folk is we will be spending a bigger percent of our incomes on food. Grain speculators will have a field day and many people will starve. There will be a few food aid gestures to the 3rd world, but it won’t last and then the hoards will swarm Europe.

With higher food prices, I wonder if food turned to fuel will slow or cease.

  24. Apneaman on Sun, 6th Aug 2017 1:15 am

boat, it depends. If the overlords and the system continue to operate with impunity then the profits will come first. Letting the commoners starve while selling the food for big money or using it for strategic purposes has happened before. Irish famine, Holodomor, India multiple times, China and on and on throughout history.

    How Churchill ‘starved’ India

“Some three million Indians died in the famine of 1943. The majority of the deaths were in Bengal. In a shocking new book, Churchill’s Secret War, journalist Madhusree Mukherjee blames Mr Churchill’s policies for being largely responsible for one of the worst famines in India’s history. It is a gripping and scholarly investigation into what must count as one of the most shameful chapters in the history of the Empire.

The scarcity, Mukherjee writes, was caused by large-scale exports of food from India for use in the war theatres and consumption in Britain – India exported more than 70,000 tonnes of rice between January and July 1943, even as the famine set in. This would have kept nearly 400,000 people alive for a full year. Mr Churchill turned down fervent pleas to export food to India citing a shortage of ships – this when shiploads of Australian wheat, for example, would pass by India to be stored for future consumption in Europe. As imports dropped, prices shot up and hoarders made a killing.”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/soutikbiswas/2010/10/how_churchill_starved_india.html

It almost seems letting them starve has been the rule, not the exception. Most of my examples have happened within the last 100 years.

I think in the near future we will see multi year crop failures and/or reduced yields. Fat westerners will be paying out a bigger percent of their incomes on food – we have much farther to fall than many others. There has already been much damage to crops this year from heat stress and Rain Bombs, but I am not confident that major damage will continue every year….yet. Wait and see. It’s a when, not an if. Start squirreling away those 13 cent no name Ramen noodles. You will be able to use them as currency one day.

Arctic Sea Ice; A View to a KILL:Paul Beckwith

    “Published on Aug 4, 2017

There is basically NO thick ice left on the Arctic Ocean surface. The thicker ice was mostly exported out to destruction via the Fram Strait & Canadian Archipelago last winter. Ice left is only a weak semblance of its former self, fractured and broken into small pieces & subject to whims of surface currents & winds.

I discuss relentless ice melt on the surface from warm air temperatures & rain, below from warm ocean water, & on the edges from waves, winds & export. Not a pretty picture. ”

Here’s a double shot of human stupidity. Shit like this demonstrates why the humans are hopeless.

Celebratory fireworks display by wildfire evacuee leads to arrest

“Mounties in B.C. respectfully request wildfire evacuees not celebrate their return home with impromptu fireworks displays.

That’s the message being offered Saturday from the Williams Lake RCMP after arresting an intoxicated man for allegedly launching fireworks from his property in the central British Columbia community — still under strict burning prohibitions as tinder-dry conditions are keeping the provincial wildfire risk at extreme.

Police were alerted to the prohibited pyrotechnic display early morning Saturday, arriving to find the suspect in possession of several exhausted fireworks canisters.

“The 34-year-old Williams Lake man later told police that he set the fireworks off in celebration of returning home after his evacuation,” said detachment communications officer Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“It is careless acts such as this that have the real potential to trigger even more interface wildfires in the area.”

Gunfire Sparked Huge Wildfire Near Yosemite

” Gunfire sparked a massive California wildfire that raged near Yosemite National Park last month and destroyed more than 60 homes, fire officials said Saturday.

The so-called Detwiler Fire broke out just before 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET) on July 16, and burned more than 81,000 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It was 97 percent contained as of Saturday.

“The discharge of firearms, on public lands, is responsible for sparking the fire,” the department, known as Cal Fire, said in a statement on Saturday.”
