Bangladesh Govt rejects UN report on country’s population

The government has rejected the statistics of the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) annual report ‘State of World Population 2010’ that has said Bangladesh’s present population is 164 million.

“We have rejected the report and will issue a letter to the UNFPA seeking its clarification,” finance minister AMA Muhith told newsmen after a meeting held Monday at his secretariat office to review the UNFPA statistics

Citing the government’s statistics, the finance minister said the country’s present population is about 146 million.

“They (UNFPA) have made an unwarranted interference… I think they have prepared the report sitting at their New York office.”

International organisations are bound to follow the government’s statistics as per convention, but in this case they didn’t, the minister said.

Even the UNFPA did not consult the four relevant government agencies before preparing the report, he observed.

The four government agencies are the ministries of agriculture, family planning, food and disaster management, and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Mr Muhith said, adding that his government is trying to involve international agencies concerned in its upcoming census.

The finance minister also informed the newsmen that the government would make its projections for the 2011-12 fiscal budget based on the country’s population census to be conducted next year.
