Considering TPS was still down 7.8% this time last year, I'm a bit surprised consumption has resumed declining as soon as it has. I wasn't expecting numbers like this week's until about January.

Even though TPS was down 6.7% this time last year, we've still got a 4.5% decline this year. Even gasoline is at zero, which means it is down 2.3% from 2007. Since the economy started growing again last quarter, this shall be interesting to watch.

Per last week’s release from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), gasoline expenditures in the third quarter were less than commensurate with the increase in retail gasoline prices. Thus, here at The Schork Report, we maintain that the consumer’s appetite for gasoline is becoming increasingly elastic.

Gasoline at the pump was about 50 cents a gallon (-16%) cheaper this year compared to last, yet gasoline demand over the last four weeks is on par to a year ago (9.03 MMbbl/d), i.e. when the global economy was staring into the abyss.

I think the lesson to be learned on unleaded is: unleaded demand is pretty inelastic..

We did a lot of work awhile back on the issue of the effect of the 1979-82 recession on unleaded demand, and the jist of it was, there was a big decline in both unleaded and overall petroleum consumption..... There were several things going on at that time: That time period coincided with the implementation of the CAFE standards, plus the price of gas went way up because of the 1979 revolution, and of course, there was a recession during that era... a couple of quarters of 5% contraction surrounded by a pretty stinking economy for a couple of years after that....

This time, we have a similarly deep recession, but no CAFE standards (yet) and also, the price dropped from the $4 range down to the $2 range and so there are counteracting variables....The biggest decline we ever got was 5 percent, back in the October 2008 period of the shortages in the southeast due to distribution problems because of that hurricane, and since then it has been fluctuating at or near even versus the previous year....

The Dude was tracking the actual number of vehicle miles driven for awhile, and I think that might be an even more interesting number, so we can check the overall fleet MPG for that time frame....

Well, at least inelastic over some price range, say $40-$80+/bbl. Realistically, the price elasticity of demand isn't linear. Alternatives become attractive at specific price points. For instance hybrids would likely become common place at twice current prices, and pure electrics at around three to four times that.
