technology is like a religion in Silicon Valley & the SF Bay Area.
though i think that when Kunstler writes about the reaction when he gave a talk at Google, "technology will save us", well, the people who had that reaction are correct. technology will save THEM.
when those "score high on tests" engineers say, "technology will save us", which "us" are they talking about ?
i have a feeling they're not thinking about Cleveland with its 10% foreclosure rate.

I'm not convinced the technology of Silicon Valley is the kind of technology that will "save us." The kind of technology that will enable us to transition to a low-energy way of life usually isn't thought of as "technology" at all by most people.

I was riding my bike and someone took a swing at me because they thought I was taking up too much of the lane. If you get to far over then they pinch you and you may be killed. So much for national ride your bike to work day, eh. It's sad to think that computer networking provides so many of us a way to avoid using transportation fuel but workplaces resist to implement solutions. I have such a dim view of humanity. It's sad.
Anyway, I saw that article on CNN the other day and it caused me to ponder just how far the media has come in the last year that I have been obsessed with peak oil. The treatment of peak oil went from having the connotation of a conspiracy theory to being a valid viewpoint held by many people in the industry.

No, CNN shows are only broadcast on CNN. I only have OTA stations, too, but I was in a deli a couple of months ago and it was shown there, pretty good coverage of Simmons if this is the same program.

So any kind of news(!?) about peak-oil will be just news, nothing more, and it is in the category nuts people-not interesting-me doesn't care.
Cool. Use it to your advantage. All of us peak oil-aware people have the advantage of foreknowledge. You and I are more prepared for a future that others cannot yet see. We will have erased our personal debt. We will have moved our investments into metals and properties. We will have already learned basic skills like urban farming, carpentry, how to build a wind turbine from household scraps, how to wire up a home for solar, etc. We are already ahead of everyone else. We will be the experts that the poor and huddled masses will look for guidance on how to cope with less energy.
Use that power wisely, my young apprentice.....

When I started survival prepping a year ago it was not in relationship to peak oil but to events that can happen. Ice Storms, terrorism, earthquakes, etc. Those events are somewhat random and do not occur on a regular enough basis for people to get to thinking about prepping.
Peak oil is quite a different matter. People are already quite aware of the price of fuel and heating and cooling bills. They do not understand why the prices have gone up so high and so fast. Most blame it on gouging by the oil companies or George Bush and Dick Cheney.
If this CNN special is done right, it might wake up a few people who only get their news from main stream media. From conversations with a few people at work, gasoline prices are something tangible that impacts them every day. If they take the time to watch it, at least a few might have an awakening to what is really going on in their world.

There was a segment on towards the end of ABC World News which asked if it was the end of the American road trip. The parts that stood out were the following:
*4 dollars a gallon might seem like a bargain in the near future
*Airline travel will become a luxury
*People WHO STILL HAVE JOBS will end up moving closer in the cities
Yeah I know you guys have been saying this for awhile here but its just weird seeing this on MSM.
Note: I just noticed this written transcript is a little different than the video segement I watched. The transcript left out the part about airline travel becoming a luxury.

OMG, the flood gates are about to burst. Quick, buy more supplies, buy more ammo.
