He's giving us all a glimpse at our immediate future. By that I mean, we're going to blame:
* the democrats because they stopped us from drilling for our oil right here in america.
* The Arabs because they're not producing enough oil.
* The environmentalist because they stopped us from drilling, and building more production
The message is that we could, (and with a repub congress could) go right on living the non-negotiable american dream.
And none of the candidates even talk about the changes that must be made simply to survive.
And you wonder why I remain a doomer?

If the oil that we extract from Alaska is not nationalized it'll just be sent to Japan.
It's their resource, and they should be able to use how they deem fit.
Conservation and lessening environmental impact from drilling is in our national interest.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Everytime I find some position or thing particularly worrisome, I ponder the title of that movie. So, Stop Worrying and Love the Neocons.

I swear, the only people less qualified to comment on the economy than pundits are economists.

Reminds me of the old Cree Indian Proverb:
Quote: Only when the last tree is cut; only when the last river is polluted; only when the last fish is caught; only then will they realize that you cannot eat money.
Haha, even that is wishful thinking. We still won't understand. We will turn to blaming someone/something else for our woes. It was all the fault of <insert today's demon>!

Even with a democratic ruled congress and possibly presidency it will be very difficult for them to withstand the pressure to do something, anything, to deal with the crisis. It will be interesting to see if and when they give in about ANWR and then other domestic drilling.
My guess is that they will put forth ineffectual measures such as tax credits for wind/solar and raise CAFE standards. Hey, I want these things but really- they ain't gonna cut it.
Then by 2010 the heat will really be on- the Limbaugh/Hannity clones will be screaming for it and I think the populous will follow. Just do something! Now! Drill!!!
Not that it will do squat-

Limbaugh talkin' oil?
Endless supply of oil as his inner thighs rub against each other and produce gravy. (courtesy of an old Letterman line)

Granny without heating oil > all environmental concerns.
I think its pretty fortunate the way the environmental concerns have delayed our access to various Alaskan and offshore sources; its better to use up the Arabs' oil first, THEN use our remaining sources; even if it does mean that things are a bit more expensive than they might otherwise had been.

Here is a very short article on the basics of peak oil published yesterday by Yahoo.
Peak Oil: Problems And Possibilities
Quote: The nonrenewable status of fossil fuels isn't up for debate - we've run out of dinosaurs - but the timing and consequences of peak oil are controversial. Some believe that we are already on the down slope, while others believe this is nothing but fear mongering. In this article, we'll examine the debate and explore some of the consequences that are likely to arise when the well runs dry.
What is clear, however, is that we don't have another hundred years of seemingly limitless supply.
What the days after the peak will look like is up for debate. It is very possible that the peak will have massive consequence for society as we know it today, especially if alternatives can't be found.

Actually, this post should be in Aaron's thread.

Just found this on cnn.
Quote: Will we ever run out of oil?
All of the world's resources are finite so we will run out at some point. The big debate at the moment is about when oil production will peak -- i.e. when half of oil stocks have been used and production begins to slow.
Texan born geophysicist Dr M. King Hubbert first came up with the peak oil theory -- known as 'Hubbert's peak' -- in the 1950s, arguing that U.S. oil production would peak in the early 1970s. He was right. And since 1981, the world has been using more oil than it has been finding.

It's useless , in the face of all the information I can give to friends, they always say I'm nuts and peak oil it's impossible. So my conclusion is , wherever they say it, nobody ( I mean real people in real numbers NOT just us, 'the chosen few') take it seriously.
I had the 'negation till death' even from super-smart people with a lot of experience in engineering & stuff.
Therefore nobody will believe this 'hype' until there is too late, and it is too late already...
So any kind of news(!?) about peak-oil will be just news, nothing more, and it is in the category nuts people-not interesting-me doesn't care.
