I had a poll about how many members are "Survivalists," inspired by the piece: Are you a "survivalist"?

THIS WAS interesting reax:
QUOTE
"Ok, this article is moronic. I was actually interviewed by the author,
Samantha Gross, for this article, and thankfully, they didn't quote
me. She told me the article would be about "people making sustainable
life changes because of peak oil" - if she'd told me that she was
planning this bit of idiocy, I would have turned her down.
The idea that Kathy Breault (who I hooked Gross up with for this
interview) is a survivalist is one of the stupidest things I've ever
heard. She's a midwife and grandmother who is working her butt off to
make sure her little corner of the world (Washington County NY - where
Kunstler's novel takes place) doesn't end up like a Kunstler novel.
Even in the article, the people interviewed are talking as much about
community solutions as personal ones - emergency services, community
midwifing, etc...
The problem here is that the media don't fully get peak oil - they
want to shoehorn it into easily recognizable categories for one of two
reasons - either they don't understand it, and can only look at it as
another species of "survivalism" or they want to display it as a
fringe movement. Either way, the article fails to get it - but it
shouldn't be seen as revealing anything about anything important,
except the way media distort our discussions.

Wow! I was just watching CNN and a short piece appeared featuring Maine PO survivalist Iver Lofving (is he a member here, I wonder?).
It must have only been about a one minute segment but the piece covered the basics, including the famous Hubbert bell curve.
Maybe someone can find a video of it.

Is this the one for which requests for interviewees was posted in the Planning forum?

They're making Peak Oilers sound like crackpots.
We're not all crackpots.

I know which member it is, but he may prefer to remain anonymous.
Good job!

I just saw it also. They even showed a shot of the peak oil homepage. There was a pretty informative short synopsis of "peak oil" and yes they even said the phrase "peak oil". Interesting.

Not everyone is a doomer.
They seem to believe that people living within their own means is crazy.
Even if PO was not an issue right now our lifestyles are unhealthy for us and if I dare say, almost unhuman.
A lot of people here are just trying to find ways to prepare for economic and social hardships.
Having a garden, chickens, and electricity is not crazy but practical.
The way food prices are going up and electric bills it isn't crazy but practical.
Your reason can be crazy however.

You misunderstand. I mean he may prefer to keep his PO.com identity anonymous.
But who knows.

Quote: Unlike some survivalists, Lofving has not started raising chickens or stockpiling a years-worth of food and ammunition, but he is thinking of a bigger garden and maybe a small boat … just in case.
I knew Revi was our Guy!
Good thing they didn't come to our place...

I think that they did a good job. I didn't want to sound like a nutcase. I think we'll get some interest in Peak Oil.com now. I am glad that they used the term peak oil.
I hope it gets people interested in what's going on.

It has aired at 6:50 am and at 1:15.
Did anyone else see it?

I don't know how they spun it, but I understand what Revi is doing. When one winter after another, one family after another, living in a poorly insulated residence, passes through the heating oil pain barrier, he will still be there. Someone else will face the problem of going broke. That is the whole point of this, isn't it? Smart.
