dub,
You have a valid point, but we will need some reserves to begin anew.
My hope is to avoid getting swept away in the first or second waves before the like-minded folks in my small community get a chance to lay the foundation for a new order.

The Montreal Gazette gave us a link, too.

The local paper here had it on the front page.
As long as the price stays high enough to cut consumption and prevent shortages, the masses should keep calm. First shortages that hit the headlines and its game over. People will overreact.

Everybody smile and wave to the nice people.
Quote: The US consumes 20.70 million barrels of oil daily, thus 7,555.5 billion barrels a year. Estimates of the recoverable oil in ANWR range from 7.7 to 10.4; thus if we could extract it all at once it would represent a year to a year and a half of US consumption.
We use 7 and a half trillion barrels a year? Either that or you think this is peakoil.eu. Come on, TD. This is our one chance to shine and you're messing it up!

I guess you have to walk before you can run, but I don't think this coverage insures the topic will "hit the mainstream". Even though this article was fairly neutral, PO is still being treated as a curious subculture, like the Amish, newsworthy just because of how drastically some people are transforming their lives away from the mainstream. It's just the media going "hmm, what's this?" It's not yet risen to the level of "hey, maybe they know something we don't!"

We were already running slow last week. The simple solution? The forums should be built statically (for guests at minimum). Running dynamic PHP and going to the database for *every* served web page (when it is 90% identical to last time it was generated) is expensive and useless. It works pretty well for http://bravo9.com/peakoilI'm not sure if phpBB has a static-building option though, probably not.
Like most things, you get what you pay for. Although I understand that peakoil.com has a copy of vBulletin waiting in the wings. If I recall, they have never been able to make the conversion for fear of losing the present data.

Hang-on, I know a bit about this s**t. The last thing a web site in this sort of position needs to do, is to convert to anything right now - that would bring disaster (I'm sure Aaron knows this anyhow).
MySQL is lightning-fast on a good day but on a bad one it has a ghastly habit of shoving loads of cross-table stuff out to memory (& eventually to disc which just kills everything). So the immediate task is to stick more memory sticks in any free slots. Lots of it.
Failing that, start wiping old data from the large tables. There is loads of crap from years ago that can be lost. Also temporarily disable the 'search' function. Those 'LIKE' queries can be real killers...

I found this site because of the msnbc.com article. It was posted at another forum that I frequent. I am really not sure what time today I joined, it was around 1pm est. I have been here all day. I have read many of the threads. I have downloaded many of the resources. I have bookmarked many of the sites. This is my very first post. Thank you for being here.

This site will not handle a big peak in load. It's slow enough as it is. Also, the code behind the site feels very old also. I'm not really a hardware infrastructure guy but this site is going to need some TLC for it to survive a serious uptick in popularity.

Yeah, mos, we may have finally hit Peak Peak Oil Dot Com. We could be looking at the Four Horsemen of the A Pack of Lips around here pretty soon. .

All you need is a good DBA. I'm a DBA and applications developer at a rather large multi-national tech company, by the way.
vBulletin should have a large enough support community, especially since it is purchased software. Someone should quickly be able to offer a decent solution.

Welcome, IndigoMoon. You're doing exactly what you should by reading and absorbing as much as you can. Don't be afraid to ask any questions about anything, we don't bite (well most of us don't, and the ones that do are well-meaning).
We who have been around for a while also thank Aaron and all the other people who have made this site a great resource. This website has changed many lives, I'm sure.
