I thought it seemed very "laggy" tonight...are the hordes of "guests" slowing it down I wonder? I've had a couple of errors loading pages too....and it's not even "morning in America" yet! ;)

Also, there are links at the bottom. There are already 1800 viewers at 5:30 AM on Sunday. Hope Aaron has his crash-response team on hand.

We were already running slow last week.

The simple solution? The forums should be built statically (for guests at minimum). Running dynamic PHP and going to the database for *every* served web page (when it is 90% identical to last time it was generated) is expensive and useless.

It works pretty well for http://bravo9.com/peakoil

I'm not sure if phpBB has a static-building option though, probably not.

Yeah, and I hope he (or she) can Keep His Trap Shut about ID'ing himself here or he may quickly find himself scavenging among the zombie hordes instead of writing about them.

Her name is Samantha Gross.

About time...

Welcome to the thousands of new visitors this morning.

I'll be monitoring the site for traffic interruptions today.

Just rebooted to clear the memory.

Everybody play nice now... these are the people we have been waiting for.

Finally! Jeez, the site's getting utterly hammered and you guys are debating the identity of some reporter?

The US consumes 20.70 million barrels of oil daily, thus 7.6 billion barrels a year. Estimates of the recoverable oil in ANWR range from 7.7 to 10.4; thus if we could extract it all at once it would represent a year to a year and a half of US consumption.

The world consumes 85.4 million barrels a day - almost a thousand barrels a second, thus 31.17 billion barrels per year. Annual discoveries are nowhere close to this amount; consumption has exceeded discoveries since 1980, and discoveries peaked in 1965.

Image

From a lecture by retired BP geologist Colin Campbell.

The US used 20% of the 2006 corn crop for ethanol - and realized less than 2% of our fuel needs. Ethanol is corrosive to engine components and as a result can't be transported in the massive domestic pipeline system, either.

Just a little start. Some Peak Oil primers:

Wikipedia (Defcon 5)
Energy Bulletin (Defcon 4)
peakoil.com (Defcon 3)
Saintbryan (Defcon 2)
James Kunstler (Defcon 1)
Matt Savinar (Defcon 1)

List (and Defcon rankings) courtesy of the Oil Drum.

Mods have about five threads to merge on the MSNBC piece...

So what are the stats saying in terms of difference in volume from the typical?

So this is why the site is slow today. Does this mean we about to be knee deep in yuppies trying to protect their reasoning for buying that hummer/Mcmasion, spouting off abiotic theory(we just got rid of those) and all those lovely theories on how Anwr or some other oil field will save the day?????

Orders of magnitude.

I'll post some results tomorrow.

:)

"Orders of magnitude" greater site traffic. Hmmm. I guess I'm glad the general public is getting the message. I worry about their initial reactions to the cold hard facts, but the sooner the better to get that over with.

I agree that food is going to get hit with this. Let's hope they don't all decide to top off their tanks right away and cause disruptions.

Clarity, simplicity and honesty:
Sydney Morning Herald

Can't put it much plainer than that...

The AP story was reprinted in the Wisconsin State Journal this morning. The Journal is one of the largest, in terms of circulation, newspapers in the state.

It also has a conservative editorial board.

Things are moving very fast now. Time to stock up and move to your final destination.

HA!

Anybody stocking up and preparing for societal collapse would only be marginally better off if indeed TS-does-HTF. If things get that bad, then surely, starving bands of zombie people will find you, find your dwindling stash of supplies, and will raid your lil' parsnip garden. And even if a survivalist can hide really well, what happens as the years go by and shit runs out or breaks down? What happens when your solar electricity inverter craps out and you are in the middle of nowhere? What happens when you can't get good pesticide and some bug infestation is eating all your cabbage? There is a gazzilion things that can go wrong and there is probably no way to fully prepare. And even if there were away to build an impenetrable lifeboat, life will surely be miserable there. So what's the point? It it so someone can get old, have their health go to hell and have no doctor to relieve the pain and suffering?

Screw it. If the ship goes down, I'm going down with it. And, in the mean time, I don't have to live like a survivalist.
