OMG Eli! I never would have guessed. BTW, I am willing to shoot tresspassers and taste your food if you'd be willing to throw me a few scraps from your dinner table post-peak.

Seriously- many of the rich and super rich do know the gig is up and are investing accordingly. Read Money magazines and they extole on the virtues of investing in energy. See how Bill Gates is shorting US dollars and Buffet bought an unbelievable amount of silver. Peak oil understanding or not, financiers understand that we are in dire economic times in terms of housing bubble, debt, expensive foreign wars, aging boomers, etc.

They also understand that most all the oil is located in countries with volatile political establishments. Mix that in with a touch of fear of global terrorism and modern day Holy Wars and you have a lot of nervous analysts out there. Many (the smart ones) are scared poopless of inflation and a severe economic downturn.

This guy from Fortune just happens to be like us. They see all the other s%it but realize that Peak Oil is most likely the Big Enchilada- that frozen hunk of ice ready to deal the hardest and quickest blow. He's gonna get his money set up right so he can go on sipping beaujolais with his wife and admire the servants toiling under the sun on his plantation.

Probably a lot like the rest of us would do if we had a few extra billion. So Mr. Eli, please let me taste your food!!

That was my impression.

Somebody on this board might have $10,000 to drop on preperatoins. Or only $100.

We're just as self-interested as he is. I might, for instance, drop $1,000 so I can afford to check out some property up in the Northwest.

He might drop $100,000,000 to buy an island.

How many of us, if we had the same type of coin, wouldnt' be acting exactly as RR is?

Best,

Matt

PS

Ditto on the compound thing guys.

A guy like him has already made his move. Why would he tip off everybody else in a magazine like Fortune? This article is really scary. It makes me think that whatever is going to happen may happen soon. I am not worried about the Richard Rainwaters of the world. He'll probably be fine. There are lots of other people for whom a rise in oil from $2 to $3 is the difference between life and death by hypothermia. If Mr. Rainwater really wanted to make something of his life he would be constructing lifeboats for some of these people. Maybe help out the people of that town that he hangs out in. Open a solar hot water panel plant, pay fair wages. He may end up making lots of money anyway. Work on the infrastructure. Prepare them for a post peak world. Otherwise he's just another rich guy who profited from other people's misery. Carnegie without the libraries.

.

Well, at least he won’t freeze to death after the collapse if he bought a good wood stove to burn his money in. How many BTUs can you get out of $2 billion in $20s?

Funny I read the Fortune magazine article, and even passed it along to a couple of co-workers.

And I was just going to put a post asking if Rainwater is out there surfing and maybe even this message board since it sounds like he does this kind of thing.

So Kochevnik, you could very well be the man!!! If you're not, I wouldn't be surprised if he's out there somewhere lurking...

Regardless, it makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only "kook" out there. When I bring this issue up to others (like at work) I usually get the, "don't worry too much about oil supply issues" or "people have been saying we're running out of oil for decades and it never happens." I feel like I've been analyzing this issue, reading up on this issue more than the average person and yet I don't really know (and end up feeling like maybe I am some kind of kook). It's nice to know there are other "normal" (well I guess Rainwater would be considered a step ahead...) people out there thinking like I am.

Rock on Rainman!

Kochevnik, Eli, Liamj and Bruin all claim (in jest) to be Richard Rainwater. However, I want to come clean that I am the real Richard Rainwater. Life is hard when you're a billionaire, you have to do absurd things such as passing yourself off as some kind of hippy lady.

Cool, nice to meet you Richard. Could I please have a few hundred thousand dollars to help me buy some land up north and build an eco-structure on it? I sure would appreciate the help. Thanks buddy...

Wait that's my idea. Don't listen to Coyote Richard. I'm the one who deserves the land and the eco-structure. Me! I do! Pleeeeease!!

If I had that type of coin, I'd have an off-the-grid ecocompound with a Gaddafi-style bodyguard contingent to protect me:

I admit!

I'm his long lost adopted son.

Or not...

It'd be cool though if he randomly wrote people into his will that he like on-line and tracked down...

:)

Alright alright.

I'm actually a peak oil obsessed billionaire.

And I have set up a peak oil retreat on an isolated island, and will be taking applications beginning now in this thread.

To apply, send $500 to:
