The World Wants Air-Conditioning

The World Wants Air-Conditioning thumbnail

More than crickets and fireflies, more than baseball and cookouts, perhaps nothing signals the arrival of summer in the United States like the soft familiar whir of air-conditioning.

But there is growing concern that as other countries adopt America’s love of air-conditioners, the electricity used to power them will overburden electrical grids and increase planet-warming emissions.

The number of air-conditioners worldwide is predicted to soar from 1.6 billion units today to 5.6 billion units by midcentury, according to a report issued Tuesday by the International Energy Agency. If left unchecked, by 2050 air-conditioners would use as much electricity as China does for all activities today.

Greenhouse gas emissions released by coal and natural gas plants when generating electricity to power those air-conditioners would nearly double, from 1.25 billion tons in 2016 to 2.28 billion tons in 2050, the report says. Those emissions would contribute to global warming, which could further heighten the demand for air-conditioning.

Right now air-conditioning is concentrated in a handful of countries, mainly in the United States and Japan, and increasingly in China.

While 90 percent of American households have air-conditioning, “When we look in fact at the hot countries in the world, in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, where about 2.8 billion people live, only about 8 percent of the population owns an air-conditioner,” said Fatih Birol, executive director of the energy agency.

As incomes in those countries rise, however, more people are installing air-conditioners in their homes. The energy agency predicts much of the growth in air-conditioning will occur in India, China and Indonesia.

Some of the spread is simply being driven by a desire for comfort in parts of the world that have always been hot. But other factors are at play.

For example, as household wealth increases, so does the presence of household appliances like refrigerators and televisions, the report notes. These appliances generate heat, making homes warmer.

And because air-conditioners work in part by venting hot air outside, they also make the surrounding neighborhood warmer. By some estimates air-conditioning can raise overnight temperatures by about two degrees Fahrenheit (one degree Celsius) in some cities, the report said. Practically speaking, if enough of your neighbors buy an air-conditioner it may increase the temperature in your home enough to drive you to do the same.

And then, of course, there’s climate change. India is already one degree Fahrenheit warmer on average than it was a century ago. This has led to more “cooling degree days,” or days when average temperatures are warm enough to necessitate air-conditioning.

“If you look at cooling degree days for Chennai or Mumbai, these are places that have twice as many cooling degree days as the hottest city in the U.S., Miami,” said Lucas Davis, director of the Energy Institute at the Haas School of Business of the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s unbelievably hot — there’s nothing in the U.S. that compares in terms of heat to these cities in India.”

And when it gets hot, forgoing air-conditioning can be deadly. The heat wave that plagued Chicago in 1995 killed more than 700 people, while the 2003 European heat wave and 2010 Russian heat wave killed tens of thousands each. Researchers have found that climate change made the European heat wave deadlier and the Russian heat wave more likely.

The introduction of home air-conditioning in the United States has cut premature deaths on hot days by 75 percent since 1960, another study has shown. That is why both Dr. Davis and Dr. Birol say the solution lies not in convincing countries to forgo air-conditioners, but in making air-conditioning more energy efficient. That could cut by half the additional energy demand for cooling in the coming years.

Many air-conditioners on sale in India today use twice as much electricity to provide the same amount of cooling as more efficient units, Dr. Davis said.

On the other end of the spectrum, air-conditioners sold in Japan and the European Union tend to be 25 percent more efficient than units sold in the United States and China.

Governments should set efficiency standards for air-conditioners and provide incentives for manufacturers and consumers, Dr. Birol said. Some countries are already passing energy efficiency standards. And as part of an agreement known as the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol, other countries are working to phase out refrigerants used in air-conditioning units that are also potent greenhouse gases.

Dr. Davis said electricity prices must also play a role in developing countries. “It is hard to make more progress on any of those fronts without more rational pricing for electricity,” he said. Accounting for emissions in the cost of electricity and removing subsidies would encourage more efficient air-conditioning and more sustainable buildings, he said.

The report also envisions a role for renewable energies — especially solar power, which to some degree aligns the peak of its energy generation, in the middle of the day, with the peak demand for cooling.

No matter what, air-conditioning will be a major issue in the fight against climate change, Dr. Birol said.

“When I look at the next few years to come, air-conditioners are only second to the entire industrial sector,” he said. “Twenty-one percent of the total world electricity growth is coming from the need to meet the growth of air-conditioner electricity demand.”

Just another unsustainable trend of man’s increasing drive for more consumption and growing population. Add to that food and water with are part of the triad of human needs of energy, food, and water. On a side note. I am using my solar system to power my Daikin mini split quad-zone system. This inverter technology is very efficient especially when zoned. I can even heat with it but that is more restricted. I can cool per the need in the house with units located in different areas. This means I can use one or all according to need. My solar system supports a home that is on and off grid. I have solar for a backup in case the grid is down. I am a prepper so I have it in case of grid instability or failure. I am also trying to recoup my investment. I find in the summer when the sun is good it is a great way to lower electricity usage by running my A/C with solar. This Daikin unit allows a solar system to power it where traditional central air for a house in the US is too big a draw. This is a little tricky for those who might not be able to remain around their home. It requires demand management. If it becomes cloudy I switch the A/C to grid power and run something smaller on solar or I will drain down the batteries. My inverter system will kick over automatically to grid power charging of the batteries once the battery charge drops to a low point so I am safe but I am avoiding battery cycling to extend the life of my batteries. This means I manage my loads during the day according to the sun. I don’t use my system at night unless needed. All my lights are led. All my circuits are switchable except for things like water heater, dryer and electric oven. These are grid dependent. I space heat and heat water with my wood boiler in the cold months.

Mankind was made weak by AC. They should have adapted to their climate instead of creating and living in artificial bubbles. So much energy wasted that now endangers the entire species.

in 1902, a 25-year-old engineer from New York named Willis Carrier invented the first modern air-conditioning system

I read an article when I lived in New England that folks in Maine now required air conditioning as a necessity, even though the summer hot weather was a few weeks!
An old timer lamented this is just crazy.
Also read a WHOLE city in China has one purpose, manufacture air conditioners for the world market.
Never liked it myself, but my 96 year old Mother requires it 24/7 here in Florida

Two items: 1) the freon used for heat exchange is supposedly a very potent greenhouse gas. We have enough in present A/C systems to have a major climate change impact all on their own. I understated that propane could have been chosen, but chemical companies would have lost out. Another example of the primacy of federal reserve money and control.
    2) “… air-conditioners sold in Japan and the European Union tend to be 25 percent more efficient than units sold in the United States and China.” Speaks for itself.

    ”because we can”

the three words that govern uncontrolled transport, food consumption, building extravagance, interplanetary flight—you name it, we do it because the energy…..cheap surplus energy that this…..is available to provide it.
we have come to regard this as an inalienable right

but of course the oilparty is all but over, yet our insatiable appetites go on

we cannot stop it because it is part of our genetic makeup that we must ”consume” in to order to survive

just as our ancestors did—-our brains have not evolved in the last 10–20–50k years—they consumed, ….we consume even more.

they just grazed the planet, we consume the planet itself.

  6. Davy on Tue, 15th May 2018 7:25 am

A/C has made man weak and I don’t like it from an intellectual view point. Yet, if you want to maintain a home and keep humidity down you need it. To go back to a previous ways of living where humidity was not such an issue is hard. If you want to avoid mold and pollen from getting in it is sure nice to have a/c. Those days will likely come again so if you can plan accordingly. My home has many windows so I try when the conditions warrant to open windows instead. I have a split level with half the downstairs in the ground. This makes for a natural cooling effect which I can utilize as needed. Heating is not an issue for me. I heat with wood. I have so much firewood I could go into business.

One thing that amazes me these days is how the glass office buildings are built. There will be no ventilation if the power goes off. Look at pictures of cities in the 20’s and you will see windows and awnings. What a difference from today. Yea we have set ourselves up in overshoot with population, consumption, and climate location. What I mean by climate location is we have populations where they should not be without the ability to heat or cool with energy and what is worse import food and water. The ME is one big disaster in the making with food, water and human climate control arrangements.

“air-conditioners sold in Japan and the European Union tend to be 25 percent more efficient than units sold in the United States and China.” Speaks for itself.”

Yea, but some of that is cost and application. Big houses are cooled better with big central air setups for the money. Small living arrangements are cooled well with smaller more efficient units. The system I put in was double the cost of what a traditional central air would have been. Americans have trended towards bigger homes unfortunately. This will change soon and those with Mcmansions will be sucking eggs. I laugh every time I drive by these monstrosities. More than laugh it makes me sick. I know people that have them and they are clueless about the risks they have put themselves in both with cooling and heating. Pipes break in winter and homes become dangerously hot where they cannot be ventilated.

The dehumidifying aspect of AC is becoming more essential. With a 1.2C rise in global temps since 1750 we also have the concomitant rise of 7% in humidity levels. And when wet bulb temps exceed 35C at an increasing rate in the future only those with serious AC capabilities will survive. At least for a little while longer.

A/C, always too hot when it finally kicks on, and always too cold when it finally goes off.

Interesting how it works, that some people cool down to 70 when it’s 95 outside. That’s just insane and incredibly unhealthy. But I must say, I knew a man who walked around in a short sleeve shirt at 0 degrees and was thoroughly comfortable.

Then you have places like restaurants, where the staff are running around, heating up from activity, while the diners are just sitting there in a cool state. So, the workers are begging to go lower, and the patrons are begging to go higher, each justified in their respective preference.

Interesting, too, how we’ve poured huge sums into buildings that cannot function without A/C. Lots of windows to foster a greenhouse effect, but none of them open when the EMP hits.

I agree with Go Speed on the portable A/C as the dumbest idea ever perfected. Granted you’re pushing the hot air out the window hose, but you’re using air you’ve cooled to fan the hot freon. The standard central unit, with the compressor sitting outside your bedroom window, cools the coils with ninety degree air.

However, I disagree with the idea that these should become illegal. The real problem is more the inability to understand how ridiculous they are than the machines themselves. Overcoming stupidity is an individual project. It cannot be accomplished by mandate. IMHO

Until you factor in public debt. Germany and Holland have lower per capita wealth but a far lower public debt (Holland 54% GDP, Italy 132%)

The reality is that western European countries do not differ that much in real wealth (=productivity), but differ very much in fiscal discipline.

If the Italian state wants to dump 250 billion of debt, it should do so on its own citizens. 250 billion over 60 million Italians is merely 4,000 per capita, or 10k per family. It is perfectly defensible to burden every Italian citizen with a new mortgage to help their government shed some debt, debt that came into existence because of the low tax morale of the Italian.

But again, the new right-wing Italian government has denied that it wants to ask the ECB for debt relief.

Why doesn’t Richard Spencer go marching in downtown Detroit? He only goes where he knows the pigs will protect him..If he went into the cities they would chop him up into a million pieces and feed him to the pit bulls..He would piss himself, more than Ted Nudget.
