GQ Magazine decided to run a controversial article about “Peak Oil” which dealt with the increasing economic and environmental cost of supplying the world with oil. We were asked to create print ads to highlight the issue of Peak Oil to an apathetic public. We showed the ubiquity of oil and oil by-products in our lives by ¬†visuals of everyday objects created from oil drops.

are other countries talking about peak oil? I don’t see it in the media or a focus anywhere….yes the United States is still in deep denial but what about the rest of the world….

With all the US bashing going around I rarely hear any praise for those of us recognizing real problems and addressing them. The US is at peak absurdity but there are many free thinking sober thinkers still in the US. Another issue I see with the rest of the world is the default position of blaming all problems on the US. The rest of the world should ask themselves “How have I contributed to this mess and how can I make it a little better. One way to make it a little better is to quit the blame and complain game.

    Bob,

I interact with large groups of individuals on a daily basis. I know of exactly three people that understand peak oil. My wife, my son, and one of my best friends. Peak oil is not only a concept that the vast majority of people don’t understand, it is a concept that the vast majority have never even heard about. If I were to take a guess, I would think one in tens of thousands of people, or less, have any clue what-so-ever about peak oil.

Most people I talk to about peak oil and our fossil fuel fed industrial civilization, have no idea about the realities and just change the subject. I will insist and then be met with blank stares or ” yea gas prices are ridiculous the speculators are the problem”. “there is plenty of oil the problem is over regulation.”

yes but what country are you people from? I am in the U.S and I am wondering what other countries are talking about? I don’t hear any other country talking seriously about peak oil?!!? I know about the German leaked military report etc…but what I am asking is what else is there out there…

The article in GQ that these ads were created for was published in July 2008. Even so, peak oil is a concept that most people have never heard of.

I suspect that will always be the case, even long after the effects of peak oil have destroyed the world economy and many, many lives.
