High-speed Hyperloop project ready for key test in Nevada

Engineers will soon conduct a crucial test of a futuristic technology championed by entrepreneur Elon Musk that seeks to revolutionize transportation by sending passengers and cargo packed into pods through an intercity system of vacuum tubes.

Hyperloop One, the Los-Angeles-based company developing the technology, is gearing up to send a 28-foot-long (8.5 meter-long) pod gliding across a set of tracks in a test run in Nevada in the next few weeks, spokeswoman Marcy Simon said.

Hyperloop One is working to develop a technical vision proposed by Musk, the founder of rocket maker SpaceX and electric car company Tesla Motors. In 2013, he suggested sending pods with passengers through giant vacuum tubes between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Hyperloop aims to achieve speeds of 250 miles per hour (402 km per hour) in its upcoming phase of testing.

As it gears up for that experiment, the company on Wednesday released the results from a May 12 test in the Nevada desert. A Hyperloop One sled on wheels for the first time coasted above a track using electromagnetic propulsion and magnetic levitation, Simon said.

It levitated for 5.3 seconds in a vacuum-sealed tube and reached speeds of 70 mph (113 kph), the company said in a statement. By comparison, another test by Hyperloop One that made national headlines last year was done on an open-air track, not in the tube, a key to achieving high speeds.

Backers of the project envision the pods reaching speeds of 750 mph (1,200 kph), but skeptics say the hyperloop idea faces real-world challenges ranging from obtaining construction permits to making turns at jet speed.

Hyperloop One has raised $160 million in funding and has touted the technology’s potential as a rapid-transit option.

Hyperloop One will move people and things faster than at any other time in the world,” Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One, said in a statement.

So SST’s like the Concorde never existed? So Mach 5 (or above) military jets never existed?

So no rocket ever reached earth escape velocity of roughly 7 miles a second (or over 25,000 MPH)?

Less vague sweeping hyperbolic statements (which are completely untrue without context) would be FAR more credible?

Once I hear that, I’m not believing ANYTHING that guy has to say without solid proof.

Incredible, 160m raised for this vaporware.

Also not mentioned by Rooters, musk has nothing to do with this, his ‘contribution’, such as it was, consisted of talking. Really thats all. The CEO mentioned, is a venture capitlist of some sort, that may, or may not, know musk personally (not that that makes much difference).

The concept of a ‘hyperloop’ is hardly new, musk did not invent it. The idea first appeared as early as 1799.

Research prof at ga tech had mockup of such a system in hydraulics lab in 1965. So much for mr. musks genius and original innovation.

or he watched Futurama and got the idea. or was it the Jetsons?

I’m currently reading a 1950s novel by Heinlein that has even better and faster transports along similar lines. Nothing new here, or practical. Musk is a joke on technology, but he will sucker in a lot of techie ‘investors’ … er … SUCKERS! LOL

oh boy. this is what we need.
a speedy train in a tunnel.
    so glad the rich billionaire
    capitalists are busy figuring out
    what we really need.

they tell us what we need, and they force
us to buy it. like ethanol in our gas.

we dont get to tell them what we need.
So doesnt that sound just like communism?

New high-speed rail in NW China completes national network

“The Baoji-Lanzhou high-speed rail is 401 kilometers long with an operation speed of 250 km per hour. Construction began in 2012. The rail line slashes the travel time between Xi’an and Lanzhou to three hours from the previous six hours, according local rail authorities.

The 1,776-km Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed rail was operational at the end of 2014, but was unable to reach central and eastern China as the Baoji-Lanzhou line was still under construction.

The new rail line will boost outbound passenger flow from the northwest and improve transport capacity on the Eurasian rail corridor.”

From W. Berry’s Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front

… and you will have a window in your head.
Not even your future will be a mystery
any more. Your mind will be punched in a card
and shut away in a little drawer.
When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.
