Here are nine of the safest places in the world to survive a third world war

Here are nine of the safest places in the world to survive a third world war thumbnail

WE live in dangerous times, and the threat of global annihilation is always lurking just around the corner.

Nuclear war is always a lingering threat, and recent escalations over Syria risk reviving Cold War tensions between hostile nuclear powers.

When the end times come, where are the best places to hole up away from it all?

When the end times come, where are the best places to hole up away from it all?

But what if we told you that there are some safe havens where you’d stand a good chance of surviving the end of the world?

From the frozen deserts of Iceland to the built-up city of Cape Town, these places are all ideal for surviving an apocalypse scenario.

Better get booking those flights before it’s too late, because these are the nine best places to be when it all goes Pete Tong for humanity.

Iceland

As Insider reports, Iceland is hundreds of miles away from any other land, so it shouldn’t be a target in a World War 3 scenario.

What’s more, it’s a great spot for fishing, so survivors would have an abundant food supply to keep them going until the world is rebuilt.

Iceland is a safe and beautiful country, which could be a lifesaver in the event of WW3

Isle of Lewis

This Scottish island is self sufficient and situated three hours away from the mainland.

Simply put, it’s a nice enough place to live without attracting any attention to yourself.

Antarctica

It may be a bit nippy, but in a worst-case scenario, you’d probably be safe if you managed to carve out a life in the continent’s barren wastes.

Another frozen destination, the continent's tough climate means it's hard to survive there but also not a target

Kansas City

In the event of a non-nuclear war, this is the place to be. The city is surrounded by fertile farmland, and is the ideal spot to defend against attackers.

Yukon

One of Canada’s most remote regions, the Yukon province is well off the grid.

To make matters even better, it’s a mineral-rich area which is jam packed with wildlife, meaning you could get rich and eat well whilst waiting for the apocalypse to blow over.

Cape Town

South Africa’s wealthiest city, Cape Town could be a good place to hide out in comfort.

Since the African nation keeps itself relatively clear of Western influences, there’s a good chance that Cape Town will be so far out of the way that World War 3 won’t even reach it.

Cape Town may be so far away from the action that it's one of the safest places to be when war breaks out

Guam

An easily-defendible island with a strong military presence, Guam is a wise place to hole up if you want to survive a worldwide conflict.

Bern

Switzerland simply doesn’t take sides, preferring to remain neutral throughout every major conflict.

And Bern, the Swiss capital, is easily-defensible to boot, not that war is likely to come to Switzerland.

The Swiss capital is probably a good bet, since the country has a long tradition of neutrality

Tristan da Cunha

This collection of islands is one of the remotest places on Earth, and is a top fishing spot.

We can think of far worse places to spend the end of the world than on a stunning island paradise in the middle of nowhere.

barry, you got it. The Chinese, the Russians and even the North Koreans could do that anytime. I am sure it is the first shot in any war between the super powers. Cripple the enemy bad enough and war is impossible.

If the electric grid goes down, millions will die the first week. Odds are, the 100+ nuke plants in the US would all be Fukushimas in a few weeks due to lack of fuel for their generators. Gas stations would not work. All internet would be down. (ATMs, banking of any kind, credit cards, snap cards, etc.) All A/C and warehouses full of frozen foods gone. Many millions of vehicles would stop where they were and never start gain. And on and on.

Few consider the trap we have built for ourselves in today’s techie world. Never in history has it been possible for a country to take down another in a flash. now it is. Duck and cover!

Wake up! If Trumpf gets elected the SS troopers will be out jailing anyone who ever criticized him. Achtung! Then he’ll nuke any arabian states (cause they’re all muslims) and Mexico because it won’t pay for a wall.

  5. Wm on Sun, 16th Oct 2016 11:59 pm

Guam? LOL! You serious? Because it’s a big Pacific USAF site, it has crosshairs all over it for ICBMs. Give me break. Who writes this junk?

Nukes will contaminate the planet, block the sun. Everything will die, starve, freeze to death. Be lucky if anything survives. That’s why it was called MAD.

Any survivors will die of cancer eventually, or watch their kids and their loved ones be eaten by cannibals. Better off dead in a flash. It would be total hell on Earth. Armageddon with the majority dead. Giant boneyards everywhere. Nothing romantic about it. Be nothing like a stupid romantic survival movie. People are nuts.

If it happens, it happens there is nothing absolutely nothing you can do there is no safe place. All I can say is I’ve made my peace with God and I’m not going to worry myself sick over it. It’s coming, it’s gonna happen. We can just stick our heads in the sand with our asses in the air and see you on the other side.

There will be one bomb, smuggled into the country and placed in Yellowstone National Park. One bang and the USA is a third rate country. It will be blamed on the middle east.

Has anyone even thought about the scene after an EMP blast over Kansas? Tens of thousands of auto accidents. hundreds of planes crashing from miles high. Thousands, maybe millions of fires from electrical overloads as the wave hits. Every machine in the thousands of hospitals going down, especially those with electronic controls. Elevators stop. Emergency generators that use electronics are fried. And on and on.

From 2016 to 1700 in an eye blink and millions of bodies to dispose of in a few days with no means to do so. Imagine the disease and varmints that would explode over that much rotting meat. It would make the Black Plague look like the sniffles.

No, I do not hope it happens. I hope not, but we seem to be asking for it everyday. Keep poking the bear or the dragon…

Fully, then don’t vote into power a war monger like Hillary, and then you have to break up the EU and NATO. Neither are run by democratically elected leaders. Not that the elections in the US are actually democratic.

There might be some initial detonations, like what we read about China targeting the U.S. west coast with about 20 nukes. There would be a lot of pressure not to retaliate with nukes. For a while, therefore, the exchanges might be limited enough to avoid extinction. But hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people who survive the detonations might be permanently blinded. You can imagine them roaming around like zombies. Who in the world would care for them? I’ve never heard of anything planned for this.

Backpack nukes, or an India-Pakistan exchange would not cause human extinction but of course would create fallout problems in Southeast Asia. An initial exchange might involve only emps.

But the Presidential decision would have to be to what extent to retaliate, assuming the U.S. would be hit first. We can not afford to elect a President who would balk and lose the opportunity to retaliate with full nukes.

Billions of people working to live, cause industry & pollution that globally kill 7+ million people per year. Tens of thousands of exploded nuclear weapons designed to KILL ALL people….WILL KILL all people.

  24. makati1 on Mon, 17th Oct 2016 7:48 am

daniel, there WILL be reprisals. The opposing country will have theirs in the air before the first ones arrive. That’s why I say that it will all be over in an hour. Russian nukes are less than a half hour from most places in the US. If they come from subs, they could be minutes away.

When will they strike the US? Hmm. I would say in the middle of the night, considering that both Russia and China are in totally different time zones from the US and will likely fire them during their day. But, who knows? Only the Chinese and Russians.

Likely they will be preceded by an EMP burst to cripple the US before the missiles reach their destinations. The old one/two punch. Millions will not even realize it happened because they will be vaporized instantly. Sobering thought, but it appears more possible today than any time since Hiroshima.

Keep in mind that a missile today carries up to 10 nukes each. Each nuke targeted to a different location. Each one multiples more powerful than the WW2 bombs. And the DC psychopaths are actually considering a first strike. Pure insanity.

@daniel: You have never heard anything planned for the blind zombies?

    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/16/politics/pentagon-zombie-apocalypse/

Yep – they have planned for even zombies…

  27. daniel on Mon, 17th Oct 2016 5:26 pm

Sorry for my grammer-thought errors. It’s something I’ve thought about deep and when I write it doesn’t always express itself as clear as I would want.

Imagine a nuke going off in the middle of the day, maybe lunch or rush hour. It might involve as little property damage as possible, or it might be extremely destructive to all life and property in a very large area.

What we have never read about are the different types of nuclear war scenarios. From the Cold War experience that lasted many years, people have generally assumed an extinction scenario, and limited nuclear war was an unrealistic option.

So, how many detonations would bring the world to extinction?

What I tried to say above is that there would be a strategy to nuke below the extinction threshold in a first strike. This could break the will of the other nuclear power to avoid full retaliation. For example, what if China were to say, as part of their assault, that they would stop if the U.S. pulls out of the South China Sea? Then all the other countries of the world could urge the U.S. not to retaliate with nukes, and there might be pressures, sabotage, and maybe even a coup to prevent a massive U.S. retaliation. Russia would also be in a position to leverage U.S. inaction, perhaps by threatening limited use of their own nukes against the U.S., or by small serial backpack terror bombs already in the U.S. The longer the U.S. would wait, the less likely there would be a massive retaliation.

Then, looking at the immediate effects of a limited first strike against the U.S., think again about the horrors of the millions of blinded survivors. No, they would not be zombies, but how would they find food and care groping around? Some – very few – would likely be brought to camps eventually if they survive that far. Who knows what would happen from there?

What is the “threshold of extinction”? I read once source that said it could be as little as 1000 bombs totaling only 100 megatons to create a nuclear winter. Therefore, from a limited first strike scenario, there would be strong call to keep things under “the threshold”.

  28. peakyeast on Mon, 17th Oct 2016 5:37 pm

@daniel: I do not believe that they can stop once they start unless they run out of nukes whoever the foolish nations are. The reaction time is too short – the impact damage takes too long to estimate – they have to act or possibly cease to exist altogether.

They cannot sit and count this many MT there, this many here. Its do or die.

  29. makati1 on Mon, 17th Oct 2016 7:39 pm

peaky, denial comes in any forms. Some want to believe that humans are rational, honest, caring beings, but life tells them that they are not. Some humans are those things, but the ones who want and have power/wealth are not. Never were. Never will be.

To think that a nuke war will be “limited” to a few, and then stop, is to believe that an alcoholic will sit down to a table full of his favorite drinks and only take a sip of one.

I think that, if it starts, it will end with ALL shots fired.(pun intended) As you said, no time to think or talk about it. We are not talking WW2 bombers that have to fly for hours to the target. Maybe just 15 minutes from launch to explosion. Less from a sub off shore. Use em’ or lose em’. And they, and us, WILL use em.

Good link, stuff I never knew about McNamara.

I remember debating with a baseball friend across the street whether nuclear war within 2 years would be more likely if Kennedy or Nixon got elected.

When I worked for the McCarthy campaign in 68, I vaguely recall McCarthy had some good words about McNamara.

A popular movie in 67 about the Vietnam War escalating into a nuclear war was called “The War Game”. The movie was shown on college campuses. In those days there were only a handful of TV stations available in any area and it would be very unlikely that a documentary like this would be played by mainstream media.

Everyone who commented here? There is no right or wrong way to nuke nations. One blast we “the world” will die, bang a f$cking apocalyptic war! Who cares how or why? If it happens so be it, if it don’t this world is still toxic? I would rather a nuke to stop hate, child rape, killings, ect. Look at all the shit that’s happened with and because of our many presidents I mean what is worse than Hilary is trump a dumb fool who’s lived his lavish life that is almost over!? We were damned with either or! Since Bill Clinton’s lies on t.v. to his apology for getting himself caught & caught up? I choose not to vote!!! Ppl should just be grateful to live or grateful for the little things in life. IT sounds like u all want war? Me? I’d rather Alaska over any of the other safe places! I’ll just stay home Northeast not fear anything except God. If there are nukes coming? We won’t have time to feel it we’ll all be dead! ……

  36. makati1 on Mon, 10th Dec 2018 5:18 pm

onlooker, I think any large city, military installation, or aircraft carrier will likely be at the top of the list. America, Russia, Iran or China are not good countries to be in either. Nor is being downwind of a nuclear power plant or target.

If it happens, the question is whether you will go in an eye-blink at the bullseye or linger for years in a nuclear winter while growing cancers. Not a pleasant thought. I hope we avoid that scenario but…?

  37. makati1 on Mon, 10th Dec 2018 5:22 pm

Sweet…: Not so, most will live thru a nuclear attack. See my above comment. Unless you are at the center of an explosion, you will likely survive. You may be blind, deaf, crippled and/or burned, but alive. No “god” will save you. There is none. Good luck.

  38. I AM THE MOB on Mon, 10th Dec 2018 6:06 pm

Humans Are Genetically Predisposed to Kill Each Other

The rate of lethal violence is 7 times higher than the average for all mammals. A new study of 1,024 mammal species has determined which animals are the most vicious killers of their own kind. Killer whales perhaps? Pit bulls maybe? For the answer, just look in the mirror.

“Step back and view our species objectively from the outside, the way a zoologist would carefully observe any other animal, or see us the way every other creature perceives human beings. The brutal reality could not be more evident or more horrifying. We are the most relentless yet oblivious killers on Earth.

“Our violence operates far outside the bounds of any other species. Human beings kill anything. Slaughter is a defining behavior of our species. We kill all other creatures, and we kill our own. Read today’s paper. Read yesterday’s, or read tomorrow’s. The enormous industry of print and broadcast journalism serves predominantly to document our killing. Violence exists in the animal world, of course, but on a far different scale. Carnivores kill for food; we kill our family members, our children, our parents, our spouses, our brothers and sisters, our cousins and in-laws. We kill strangers. We kill people who are different from us, in appearance, beliefs, race, and social status. We kill ourselves in suicide. We kill for advantage and for revenge, we kill for entertainment: the Roman Coliseum, drive-by shootings, bullfights, hunting and fishing, animal roadkill in an instantaneous reflex for sport. We kill friends, rivals, coworkers, and classmates. Children kill children, in school and on the playground. Grandparents, parents, fathers, mothers–all kill and all of them are the targets of killing…” -R. Douglas Fields, Why We Snap, p. 286, 2016.
