Of course, it doesn't have to be either or - there's nothing wrong with providing a certain minimum ration per person, and allowing the market to sort out the balance. The problem with pragmatism is that is tends to conflict with just about everyone's ideaology.
But there will be no rationing / allowances etc with the current US administration whatever happens. A constrained market and very high prices maximises profits for the vested interests...

Today, today, GM announced that its betting its future on SUVs and pickup trucks. I'm not making this up.

Metro Atlanta drivers are facing the possibility of paying considerably more than $3 a gallon for gas by Labor Day -- if they can get it at all, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting Wednesday.
The two pipelines that bring gasoline and jet fuel to the region are down -- powerless to pump as Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on electrical infrastructure.
The metro Atlanta region generally has about a 10-day supply of gasoline in inventory, said BP spokesman Michael Kumpf. The pipelines have been down for two days.

Alpharetta, Ga.-based Colonial Pipeline Co., cut off from its suppliers on the Gulf Coast, is now pumping gas from huge storage tanks, many in Powder Springs, Ga. Whether electric power can be restored to the pipeline pumps before supplies run out is "the great uncertainty ... that hangs over all of us," said Daniel Moenter, a spokesman for Marathon Ashland Petroleum, a major supplier of metro Atlanta's fuel.

CPL pipeline is the largest in the world, they ship 2.5mb a day. CPL ships products from Houston to the NY harbor. If they are down for more than a few days this will disrupt supply across the eastern US. PPL piple is also down, a very large percentage of products are shiped though these two pipelines.

Ever since I began riding my bicycle all the time several months ago, I only use about five gallons each month.
Although it totally sucks when someone in the family asks for gas money.
If it get's really bad, I'll probably have me a new one ripped, due to my views.

I'm here in Atlanta. I was out tonight and so no gas shortage.
I will check in the morning and periodically thereafter. I will try to confirm/refute the story.

I'm in Northeast Tennessee and will do the same. I will say that I just got a bulletin from Buncombe County emergency services that there may be fuel shortages and that the county/city of Asheville will be limiting non-essential travel (I work in the county). So I will update as I've got info also.

Hey, I don't know about anyone else, but I peruse and am part of a few other messageboard websites..
others are starting to put two and two together..
gas prices roughly across the board have on average risen .40 cents a gallon in less than 24 hours, with another .30 cent a gallon increase expected.
Katrina isn't the cause of all of this, or if she is, she is only the harbringer of things to come..

Dammit, I wish I had planted a garden this past year, but am damn sure doing it this spring..
and while some may be wondering about the price of gas..I am far more concerned about the price of groceries..I do have food..but am going to be getting more..and buying seeds.
I heard some talking about organic seeds being far better than the 'monsanto' ...why and can you point me to places online to buy the best seeds for vegetables from? ty.

Damn, I'm in Atlanta, and thinking about heading to the all night ChinaMart to get some more cans. Both cars were filled on Sunday, and I have 12.5 gallons in the garage.

Did I not say GM was against electric vehicles? I know they're betting the future on SUVs and that they're $300 billion in debt. Peak oil will kill them off since they made bad choices years back, unless big government keeps propping them up with our hard earned tax dollars(which will likely happen).

What bollocks, theres nothing equal about rationing, here in Aus the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act sets specific sectors, agencies and individuals as 'more equal' for rations than others, am sure its the same in other countries.

Free Market pieties aside, rationing works very well.
The nutrition standards and health of the English people actually rose during the Second World War and declined after rationing was discontinued.
When TSHTF rationing will have to be brought in or society will disintergrate in the manner that these doomers circling overhead anticipate.
Societies that do will survive, those that hold to archaic capitalist fairy-tales will cease to exist.
Your choice.
