For those who do not know ABC Australia is of a NPR/BBC standard.
For the time allotted it was good and it was fair. I liked that the representatives of both camps the show presented had street credibility.
Even better I think people outside Australia will be able to watch it at their web site. For now though here is a link to the transcript
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1515141.htm
Did anybody else Catch the ASPO on the printed graph the guy was showing of well discoveries?

Amazing that the Government consistently tries to undermine the ABC. The ABC refuses to be simply a government mouthpiece (the "free" press seem to be doing that quite well).
This station is the literal example of 'biting the hand that feeds'. Somehow, they pull it off.

Actually not, if we assume their allegiance should be to the people of Australia, rather than the current government!
We're not so lucky here in the US. PBS has gone downhill, until now it's a bland shadow of its former self.
BTW, if you like what ABC did, be sure to send them an "attaboy" message. Help out the journos who argued with their editors to go out on a limb.
Your comments can make a difference in how PO is covered.

Hi All,
I am a usual watcher of the ABC and SBS when I watch TV. I detest the commercialised sensationalism of TT, ACA etc.
If nothing else, last night's show certainly opened my eyes. Having never heard of Peak Oil, nor been particularly concerned, I was intrigued. I have been one of those ambivalent consumers who had heard the '20-30 years we'll have a problem with oil supply' but not really thought about it too deeply.
After last night's show, I googled up Peak Oil, and guess what sight I found?
So if nothing else there is one more consumer now consciously aware of the potential precipitous situation we are facing. Good on you ABC, let's hope there are more like me with their eyes open a little wider.
Cheers,
CL.

That's a great idea. You can contact them through: catalyst@your.abc.net.au
ChickenLips, welcome to the forums and to peak oil. Nice to know the show made a difference.
Now it's time to find out just how deep the rabbit hole really goes.

We (Aussies) wish....it's been 1/2 hour format for years, in spite of doing fairly well - outside of metropolitan areas. Science-type programs rate very well in the regional areas - witness the way Mythbusters is able to beat the living tripe out of the Channel Seven / Prime TV travel show "The Great Outdoors", which features (at GREAT expense) the last Miss Universe, one Jennifer Hawkins.
Yep, that's right: Miss Universe is out-rated by two of the UGLIEST guys you have ever seen on TV, both of whom are utterly clueless when it comes to fundamental Physics (such as "how much electrical current is actually fatal to a human?" - I'm convinced the two presenters on Mythbusters who have a secret desire to play the game "Is There Life After Death? Let's Find Out By Killing Ourselves!" ) This proves that sex (or sexy people) does NOT necessarily sell.
Note: Mythbusters very briefly touched on a Peak Oil related topic: how much better mileage does one get in one's car if one winds the windows down versus air-conditioning, with surprising results highly in favour of winding the windows down.
Now, the difficult bit: convincing the clueless Yuppies who run our TV shows that, yes, this ratings fiasco for Miss Universe isn't a fluke.

Give me sweet lies anyday! Remember, you are watching Big Brother so Big Brother dont have to waste time watching you.

I would say that ABC has about a 15% audience share.
People who watch ABC generally like to watch ABC and SBS and regard the other three commercial stations 7, 9 and 10 with disdain.
7,9, 10 play all US sitcoms and the like. SBS and ABC play UK and World news and movies.
I liked the program as an introduction however more could have been said on the ramifications.
Saying the word Peak Oil is one thing, giving it a meaning is another.
Hello Chickenlips glad it brought you over

Guys,
Complete newbie to this excellent forum, absolute 1st post. And I guess that's the point I was going to make in this post. Thanks to the ABC broadcast, I'm here!
Well, it was a slightly convoluted path via a link on an investment forum which I frequent regularly. My wife and I have been discussing the "exposure" of global markets to oil prices and where this ultimately might be heading. The segment on Catalyst was actually spotted by my wife who said we must watch it. It was a teaser obviously, but raised enough critical facts to throw a mental switch and make me seek more information.
Viola, Peakoil.com and my first post...
The ABC is excellent and this segment will have received a lot more "air" than you might think.
Now, I'll just go through some of the other hot threads and try to get a handle on all the possible implications of peal oil. My vested interest is to protect my highly leveraged investments and ensure my dollars are safe. There's a lot of folk advocating buying gold and heading for the hills right now with most major asset categories overheated. If peak oil is fact then this may well be a prudent course of action.
Cheers,
Michael.
