For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt
Consumption; Demand; Pricescoyote writes:

...Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.

The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean, where island nations depend on imports and food prices are up 40 percent in places.

The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries. Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.

I get ruffled if the selection of food in the house doesn't have enough choices.  I guess the next time I'm feeling like there's nothing to eat, I'll be grateful yellow mud isn't the only choice.  But this situation in Haiti is a minor sign of things to come, as the date of Peak oil, May 05 recedes into the past, with the future bringing ever higher fuel expense causing higher food prices.  In turn millions of poor people around the world will begin to starve.
I'm now wondering if there is a bell curve for oil discovery, followed by a bell curve of oil production (40 years later, 1965-2005), followed by a bell curve of population peak (X number of years later), and over the other side of that peak will be ever smaller world population totals.  So would anyone here like to make a prediction for the Peak Population point in time.  I'll start the bidding with an estimate of 12/21/2012 (winter solstice) and Mayan calender end point/transition into a new period.
