Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Dr. Jared Diamond Scheduled to Appear

Members of the media are invited to attend an exclusive preview of COLLAPSE? the major exhibition inspired by the ideas in Jared Diamond's latest bestselling book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (published in 2005 by Viking Penguin) produced by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

This groundbreaking exhibit examines how human societies have recognized or ignored -- and solved or failed to solve -- key environmental issues, including those that concern our contemporary global society.

Visitors will
  • Travel through present-day Montana (not as pristine as it may seem)

  • Investigate the fate of ancient Maya civilization

  • Look to the radical, and successful, solutions of 17th and 18th century Japan

  • Examine contemporary Australia's ongoing search for a balanced approach to its environment

  • Explore the Five Factors that contribute to societal failure or success as identified by Dr. Diamond

When: Friday, April 29, 2005 - 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
*Photo opportunity at 10:30 AM promptly followed by Dr. Jared
Diamond's media briefing. Curators and select Museum staff
available for brief interviews.
