If "it's bunker time" why the fark do you care about the price of gold? You evolved some enzyme that lets you digest the stuff?

Which is why recent developments in efficient hydrogen-powered engines and direct solar- and biofuel- powered generation of hydrogen (photocatalysis etc), might just be our most important inventions yet.

A better battery? How about a cure for the 2nd law of thermodynamics?

Sure oil has more energy density than a hydrogen fuel cell but how did that energy get there? Well it came from the sun and accumulated very slowly and "wastefully" over an incredibly long time. We want the energy density of oil but we don't want the waiting for it to build up. Well you can't have a fast battery and a super-dense one.

So we should have been perfecting the battery instead of wasting oil and gas. Hindsight is great isn't it? It's only relatively recently that our growing economies have made the generation of usable energy an important issue. What everyone is forgetting is that our societies are hardly the summit of civilisation and our addiction to technology will be our downfall. Those still looking for technofixes are advocating more and more ridiculous ideas. Helium from the moon anyone?
