How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Japanese Make Gasoline From Cattle Dung
Hydrocarbon Alternativescelticoil writes:

TOKYO (AP) - Scientists in energy-poor Japan said Friday they have found a new source of gasoline - cattle dung.

Sakae Shibusawa, an agriculture engineering professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, said his team has successfully extracted 1.4 milliliters (0.042 ounces) of gasoline from every 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of cow dung by applying high pressure and heat...

...The team, helped by staff from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology near Tokyo, produced gasoline by adding several unspecified metal catalysts to the dung inside a container and applying a 30-atmosphere pressure and heat of up to 300 degrees Celsius (572 Fahrenheit), Shibusawa said. Details of the catalysts could not be disclosed, he added.

Another poorly thought out idea from the university crowd. Where do they think the energy for collecting, transporting, compressing, and heating the dung is going to come from?
Right up there with hydrogen fuel and worse than oil sands!

Transportation and collection is not a problem. These cattle probably stand in feedlots. So there is a lot of manure at a central location.

But only an academic could get excited about a 1.2% yield! What happens to the remaining 98.8% (or should that be 105% after factoring in the secret catalyst?). If the catalyst is a heavy metal, you have just converted innocent manure to a toxic waste! What is the nett energy yield after all the heat and pressure, professor? With such a lousy conversion, 551,155 U.S. tons a year of cow dung would produce ~45,000 bbl/year of oil, less than 0.0025% of Japanese demand (~5.3 million bbl/d).
