One of the main reasons (the reason?) the US is in Iraq is get their hand on the spigot. They want American companies to go in and get all that lovely oil to market.....
You mean it won't be French companies drilling for oil in Iraq? :P

Anyways I was reading this article about some Army recruiter crying about how difficult his job was. I wonder why? Anyways the bloke was getting depressed from being rejected so often that he started losing weight, that and also since recruiters get paid commision that's probably the worst job you can have in the army right now. *long hours and low pay* The recruiter even said he'd rather be sent to Iraq then to continue his job in the US *trying* to recruit more soldiers.

Recruiters get paid commission? Say what? Please substantiate this statement with a link to a DoD website, Federal Law, or DoD administrative rule. If they get paid commission, I want to know what they earn.

One of the main reasons (the reason?) the US is in Iraq is get their hand on the spigot. They want American companies to go in and get all that lovely oil to market. To do this, they need the security situation to improve significantly. They are trying to build up the Iraqi army (to get them to do their dirty work) but there have been lots of reports about just how poorly trained they are, how much infiltration there is etc etc. The US army is going nowhere soon. I mean, do you really think all of the crap they’ve been building (bases, fortifications) is just so that they can pull out the troops and let the country degrade into civil war?

If we are out of troops, we will be out of troops. It'll be "Peak Troops".
Like it or not, we'll experience a decline in troop numbers. The draft won't fly. If one was started, we'll end up with John Kerry in 2008 and he can revisit his medal burning, troop bashing Vietnam days all over again.

Regardless if we want their oil or not, we won't be able to round up enough cannon fodder to get our greasy hands on their spigots.

But don't you have hundreds of thousands of other troops around the world just sat around not doing much.

Germany for example. The Soviet threat is long gone.

Airline Pilot, I think I have seen those books – on my son’s shelf!

He is recently promoted to instructor for his job on the AWACS platform.

My Son-in-law is in the army now (not behind a plow). He is training for some type of comms – I think it the listening type.

He scored well on marksmanship and I told my daughter that he definitely doesn’t want to be a radioman with a good eye!

Not necessarily transfers (that would make too much sense) but as I understand it, the Air Force is actually reducing its ranks and the other services are actively recruiting from them.

UAVs I guess. In the future all the planes will fly by remote and the pilots will receive training via Grand Theft Auto from age three.

Recruiters are getting desperate. Young people across the country are reporting aggressive, even illegal tactics. Recruiters not wearing their uniforms, pretending to be civilians. Physical threats and intimidation. Telling kids they have to give their names and phone numbers, it's the law. Falsifying records to hide criminal backgrounds. Taking kids to buy kits that supposedly let you pass the drug tests even if you're a drug user. Telling kids where to buy fake high school diplomas. Giving kids crib sheets to help them cheat on the military aptitude tests. One in five recruiters have been investigated for such "improprieties."

It came to a head in Houston, when one recruiter left a voicemail message telling a young man that he had to report to the recruitment center, or he'd be arrested:

Now the military has declared May 20 will be day when all recruiters review policies and standards.

What? Recruiters get commision?! That's not what my recruiter told me!
Seriously, though, I'm %99.9 sure that recruiters DON'T get commision. They get 'job performance reviews' which will dictate whether or not they get a promotion, or *gulp*, demotion.

'job performance reviews'
ha ha that's a good one. So that's what they call it in the army. :-D

Anyways once PO hits I think the army should hire all the car salesmen to be recruiters. They make excellent salesmen. :-D

BTW did you know that mechanics also get paid commission? But they NEVER NEVER call it that. It's called being paid flat rate. In other words you get paid for how many cars you "fix". Sounds like commission if you ask me. As what Shakespeare used to say, "A rose by any other name still smells the same."

Given the trends, I wonder if a draft will be instituted, notwithstanding comments by the President and Secretary of Defense. Were I a betting man, I would wager we'd see one soon.

Given the admistration policy of resource wars for oil. I see how they would want/need a draft.

OTOH, I think a draft in this country would cause mild to moderate social upheaval. People from left to right and all over have a pretty good bead on the situation. They realize that iraq is a bottomless pit of money and bodies that doesn't seem to have any tangible benefit for this country.

However, I could see the admistration waiting until the bottom of the econmy falls out. At that point jobs become scarce (maybe even food). People become desperate. New clothes, 3 meals a day and a new rifle might start to look a little more appealing to people who right now have no plan whatsover to join the service.

You haven't been to some of the boards I've visited recently. People
actually believe Bush is the hand of God. This people are so delusional
that no amount of logic or evidence would convince them otherwise. If
Bush says we need a draft, I guarantee you that Limbaugh will
support it. That means you have "inelastic" support from at least 20
million voting members of the public.

As for the media and their response, I've lost virtually all faith in the MSM.
I see them as nothing more that part of the problem, not the solution.

I don't see a draft coming soon. We would need another "mind changing" event to get that one through congress.

Good! I say draft the neo-con chicken hawks. I would love to see Sean Hannity riding around in a tank in the middle of Baghdad. Maybe Limbaugh will be drafted into the airforce. He looks like the kind of guy who would enjoy bombing unarmed villagers.

But seriously... I am almost of draft age. I do NOT feel like dying in a resource war in order for fat, lazy, stupid people to ride around in SUVs, dump chemical herbicides on their green lawns, and keep the heat on 80 degrees with the windows open. Before it comes to a draft, the United States had better improve its conservation efforts. No more NASCAR, no more Big Macs, and no more anti-Dandelion herbicides on the lawns of 3,500 square foot McMansions.

(To continue my semi-rant...) Why the hell do we feel the need to kill Dandelions? Dandelions can be eaten like spiniach and made into wine.
At least according to these people, http://www.dirtworks.net/OrganicLawnCare.html . Not that I'm ready to start eating them right now, but if things get bad, I have an extra food source that my neighbors would never think of.
