There are 6 designs of Gen-4 Fission reactors and 2 are already under construction.

Research on Thorium is accelerating. Just focusing on those could yield a safe reactor in just 6-8 years.

30 year wait period is too long.

Thorium is no more likely to magically appear to salvage nuclear fissions deadly shortcomings than fusion is. But, w/e…

More “Once upon a time …” fairy tales.

Others, the first rockets were built also an failed repeatedly. We don’t have time or resources to waste on dreams that are almost as old as I am, 68 years.

Fusion power is going to happen eventually. The science is sound and the engineering is catching up. I personally can’t think of a better way to dispose of some of our resources. The Ontario government recently wasted $1 billion on some failed gas power plant contracts. The cost of the plant was estimated at 12.8 billion… the Ontario government basically wasted nearly 10% of the budget of ITER on nothing… even if ITER costs double or triple it’s original estimate we’re talking small change for a potential huge reward.

I realize that ITER is not a power generating proposition, but even still, the proof of concept and knowledge that we’ll acquire make the effort worth many time the upfront cost. If we get a workable solution to a fusion power generation plant as a result even more so. The US government is supporting it’s currency by buying 40 billion USD worth of it’s own bonds every month… I don’t think the rest of the world can’t chip in a few billion here or there for a complex and fascinating science experiment that will potentially lead the way to a greener and more stable energy future.

Also – please forgive my terrible punctuation and grammar. I did not proof read before I posted.

Don’t forgive my double negatives though…. those are unforgivable.

    TIRBS,

You are forgiven for everything including your naivete about ITER. By your request your double negatives are not forgiven, of course.
