The Mystery of Food Politics and It’s Proposed Extrication

Wars and cross border conflicts are known to stifle food supply mechanisms and impact production on a large scale. Ukraine being foremost exporter maize, oilseeds, wheat among other food commodities stands at an all time high supply risk of essential supplies. Food, famines and farming are conspicuously deeply connected to politics and governance. All policies claim to be designed in way that will assure the end of hunger, enhance nutritional values, ensure food security and promote sustainable agriculture in societies but thought, vision and policy implementation often don’t align with the elemental needs of commoners. In academics, Food Politics isn’t a new subject – it attempts to holistically study governmental and institutional policies that comprise of regulations, control, production, distribution and consumption of food. In recent years, there has been wide scale planning on a gamut of factors like usage ...

Oil slick in the Red Sea from a British-owned ship attack by Yemen’s Houthis, US military says

An attack by Yemeni Houthi rebels on a Belize-flagged ship earlier this month caused an 18-mile (29-kilometer) oil slick, the U.S. military said Saturday. It also warned of the danger of a spill from the vessel’s cargo of fertilizer. The Rubymar, a British-registered, Lebanese-operated cargo vessel, was attacked on Feb. 18 while sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, U.S. Central Command said. The missile attack forced the crew to abandon the vessel, which had been on its way to Bulgaria after leaving Khorfakkan in the United Arab Emirates. It was transporting more than 41,000 tons of fertilizer, CENTCOM said in a statement. The vessel suffered significant damage, which led to the slick, said the CENTCOM statement, warning that the ship’s cargo “could spill into the Red Sea and worsen this environmental disaster.” “The Houthis ...

How oil and gas execs are still incentivised to grow production despite peaking demand

As the energy transition continues to accelerate, demand for each of the fossil fuels is likely to peak before 2030. Oil and gas companies must plan for an economy with falling hydrocarbon use; for most, this means setting a strategy that includes planning for declining hydrocarbon output. To ensure that transition strategies are duly executed, executive remuneration must be framed accordingly. Carbon Tracker has been analysing executive pay in oil and gas since 2019, and this note presents the latest update to the series. In this note, we delve into the executive compensation packages at 25 of the largest publicly listed oil and gas companies, analysing the incentives guiding decision-making at the c-suite level. Key Questions Addressed: Metrics Utilised: What metrics prevail in executive incentive plans? Production Growth Incentives: Which companies continue to incentivize oil and gas production growth? Supreme Court examines cross-state air pollution thumbnail

Supreme Court examines cross-state air pollution

As the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday (Feb. 21) held oral arguments on the legality of the Environmental Protection Agency’s “good neighbor” policy to limit upwind states from polluting downwind states, two legal constructs dominated the discussion: “severability” and the court’s “emergency docket.” The case is “Ohio et al v. EPA” brought by several states and joined by Kinder Morgan natural gas firm, the American Forest & Paper Association, and U.S. Steel. Severability refers to provisions that allow the remainder of legislation to remain in effect if parts of its other provisions are dropped or found illegal. Emergency applications are cases that petitioners bring to the high court, bypassing lower court action. The case before the court involves an environmental issue dating back nearly 20 years. What action can EPA take when pollution from an upwind state – Ohio, for example – which has ...

Potassium Depletion in Soil Threatens Global Food Security

Nutrient depletion in agricultural soil is nothing new. There have been numerous studies and concerns about the depletion of nutrient-rich topsoil and the loss of nutrients like carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, but scientists are now warning about the depletion of potassium in soil. In a study published in the journal Nature Food, scientists highlight how poor potassium management in agricultural soil could threaten global food security in the future without corrective actions. According to the study co-authors, about 20% of global agricultural soil is deficient in potassium. Some of the most affected areas include farms in eastern Asia, southeastern Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Globally, soils face challenges from soil-nutrient mining, when more nutrients are being taken from the soil during crop harvesting than are being replenished. The study noted that there is limited, if any, soil fertilization involving potassium, which could ...

World’s largest nuclear reactor aims to power the Earth with unlimited energy

While it may sound like part of the Mandalorian creed, experts at ITER claim “The Way” here on Earth is headed to an unimaginable goal: everlasting energy. Experts at ITER, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (and also Latin for “the way,” per the agency) are working to harness fusion reactions, the same energy source that powers the sun, according to the project’s website. If successful, the experts in southern France could provide a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels and nuclear fission with “arguably the most complex machine ever designed,” ITER’s communications lead Laban Coblentz told Euronews Next. Nuclear energy is far from new science, and while there have been well-reported disasters, the technology is stable with the right personnel oversight and protection from natural disasters like earthquakes. Fission is used to power the 436 nuclear reactors around the world and requires slamming neutrons ...

Tanker transporting Russian oil attacked by Houthis

A tanker belonging to Trafigura company, which, according to the firm’s representatives, was carrying oil of Russian origin, has been attacked by Houthis in the Red Sea. Source: Bloomberg Details: A missile attacked the tanker on its way out of the Red Sea, becoming the largest Houthi attack ever. Yemeni Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack on Marlin Luanda. The vessel was carrying oil of Russian origin – a product used for producing plastics and petrol – purchased at a price below the upper threshold set by the G7 countries, as reported by a representative of Trafigura. Kpler analysts say the vessel collected its Russian-origin cargo through what is known as a ship-to-ship transfer in the Laconian Gulf in southern Greece. This area has been playing a key role in the supply of Russian oil to the global market, as well as in handling ...

IEA to expedite 2025 oil demand forecast after OPEC’s early move

The International Energy Agency plans to bring forward publication of its first 2025 oil demand forecast in its monthly report by two or three months to April, the agency told Reuters, after OPEC expedited its forecast by six months. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the IEA are the two most closely watched oil forecasters, whose monthly reports can move oil prices and provide insight into the assumptions behind OPEC supply policy. “We plan to publish the 2025 forecast in April as opposed to June/July previously,” Toril Bosoni, head of the IEA’s Oil Industry and Markets Division, told Reuters in response to an emailed question. “The reason for this is that we will publish the Medium Term outlook in June so to avoid the overlap – and get a first detailed view on 2025 before looking out to 2030 – we ...

Biden pauses liquified natural gas exports

The Biden administration is delaying consideration of new natural gas export terminals in the United States, even as gas shipments to Europe and Asia have soared since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The election year decision by President Biden aligns with environmentalists who fear the huge increase in exports, in the form of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is locking in potentially catastrophic planet-warming emissions when the Democratic president has pledged to cut climate pollution in half by 2030. "While MAGA Republicans willfully deny the urgency of the climate crisis, condemning the American people to a dangerous future, my administration will not be complacent,'' Mr. Biden said in a statement. "We will not cede to special interests. We will heed the calls of young people and frontline communities who are using their voices to demand action from those with the power to act.'' The ...
